The 4th place goes to the Sony HDR-AS100V. The Sony HDR-AS100V plays in terms of picture and sound quality at first-class level, especially the sound is great! At a purchase price of almost 400 euros, the standard equipment leaves a lot to be desired. A few more motorcycle-compatible brackets would be befitting.

The Telefunken FHD 170/5 leaves little to be desired for motorcyclists: generously equipped as standard, good picture and sound quality, solidly manufactured. A practical remote control is also included. All of this for the competitive price of 250 euros. Top!

The Midland XTC-280 took second place. Even with the expensive extra accessories (as tested), the Midland XTC-280 remains at a fair price level. The picture quality is excellent, the sound is fine. Mainly because of the very simple operation – even with gloves – a great motorcycle action cam.

The GoPro Hero 3+ emerges as the winner of the round. The GoPro Hero 3+ clearly sets itself apart from the competition in terms of image and sound: The videos are of great quality and are on a professional level. Yes, we cam

We motorcyclists have been practicing it for a long time: capturing privately produced action in images and sound. What only interested a few race freaks for a long time developed into a mass phenomenon. And the onboard cameras keep getting better. Ten action cameras in comparison.

Thorsten Dentges

08/28/2014

You have found your way into the middle of society. The fun society. And they are particularly popular with everyone who has a lot of driving fun. For example with motorcyclists. We’re talking about action cams. Until recently they were called onboard cameras. But you can find action on every corner away from the motorized two-wheeler. So it happens that in the ski area every second father of the family accompanies the first individual attempts of the youngsters with a running camera, that in the climbing hall every climb and fall is captured on chip sensors, that now even marathon runners strap an action cam around their head and later one – probably to be expected – hardly any exciting documentation of their four-hour run to be presented.

In short: Anyone who is active in any way obviously has an increased need to record their actions. Since there is great demand, there is now also a great supply. While there was hardly a handful of affordable action cameras with satisfactory performance three years ago, there are now many providers on the market, including established photo and video camera manufacturers such as Sony or Rollei. We have selected and tested ten products.

Full HD is now standard

Back to motorcyclists – they used action cams long before this general trend. Initially, it was racing teams who digitally recorded their drives using expensive equipment in order to identify errors and improve their driving style. That still makes sense, also for learner drivers or newcomers to motorcycles.

Most of the time, however, the reason for buying an action cam is: having fun. But you have little joy when the picture and sound are so bad that all heroic deeds on the motorcycle come across as blurry, jagged and blurred. Also stupid: when the colors are displayed so oversaturated that the journey over the scenic alpine pass is twisted and psychedelic like a bad LSD trip. So that you don’t go wrong when buying an action cam, you should pay attention to a few important things in advance. Full HD is now standard. What is meant is a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Higher resolutions make sense if you want to play the films later on a large flat screen with the new Ultra HD or 4K technology (up to 4096 x 2304 pixels) or if you want to show mostly zoomed sections.

Good: freely adjustable shooting angle

10 action cameras tested

Dentges

Alternating light also during the country road test. Can the aperture react quickly enough?

The shooting angle determines how large the area to be filmed can be. So theoretically: the larger the angle, the more in the picture. Problem: the wider angled, the more distorted (especially at the edges of the image) – and therefore less realistic – the representation. So it is a matter of weighing up whether you want to have the driver’s shoulder and helmet in the picture or not, but the course of the road is shown as it actually was in front of the front wheel. It is good when the action cam gives you freedom of choice and the angle can be freely adjusted. Incidentally, the specified maximum recording angle rarely refers to the highest resolution. The best thing to do is to check how big it is with Full HD resolution.

The refresh rate is important for a smooth picture display. The human eye perceives a sequence of images as moving from as little as 14 to 16 images per second, albeit not smoothly. Rule of thumb: A lot helps a lot, from 30 frames per second (30 fps) it becomes fluid. However, more recorded images naturally generate larger amounts of data. A short trip of a few minutes can easily take up a gigabyte of storage space. The user of the action cam should therefore carefully consider how much space the storage medium offers in the camera and whether he would like to fill his hard drive with huge files later. For professionals there is no question: only top quality counts.

Switch can also be operated with gloves?

Hobby filmmakers should try what they can be satisfied with. 60 fps is a good value. Also note: Can the most important switches be operated while wearing gloves? Small, fiddly buttons can take the last nerve – or worse: thwart the best recording situations. It is also annoying when the camera is misaligned and only captures blue sky instead of exciting curves. Integrated laser pointers or, ideally, a display with a live view function are helpful. Last but not least: not only check the quality of the camera, but also that of the mounts. Unfortunately, some of them do not fit well on your own motorcycle, so check in advance because accessories are usually expensive! Tip: Always secure the camera additionally (e.g. with adhesive tape). If everything fits perfectly and if the system is optimally set, it means: start filming and have fun!

So was tested

During the test, we used the brackets supplied to mount the cameras on various machines from the MOTORRAD fleet. The fortifications were rated. Ultimately, a Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and a Honda NC 700 S served as machines to collect image and sound material from the individual cameras on defined test laps on a country road in Schurwald near Lorch and around Stuttgart.

In summer sun with a lot of alternating light and in shady forest passages, the action cams had to prove how well they can focus, fade around and reproduce the filmed trip in true color. How realistic are the engine sounds and other driving noises recorded? The testers evaluated and compared all recordings on a calibrated screen. The overall result also included: operation when stationary and while driving as well as the equipment and processing of the individual components in the set.

The final score of the product test.

Big differences in price, big differences in image quality. The GoPro is so easy to get hold of, but you have to dig deep into your pocket for that. But the market offers a good range for every budget. If you don’t want to do professional filming, you can get by with the much cheaper devices from Midland and Telefunken. And even price hit Somikon delivers great moving images, so it’s a real tip for penny pinchers. On the other hand, with the equally inexpensive a-rival, the faded scrawled images are hardly worth a penny.
