There is a station wagon for all weather conditions?

MOTORRAD has tested ten textile suits with a removable climate membrane in wind and weather. Is there the ideal textile combination for moody April days, mild summer nights and lousy-cold autumn weeks?

Jorg Lohse

Without an all-weather climate membrane, no textile combination supplier dares to go out on the streets today. The vernacular likes to speak of Gore-Tex across the board, although only a handful of manufacturers in the motorcycle segment rely on the US brand. In this test field, in which we have put together suits up to a maximum of 750 euros, Gore-Tex is not even represented as a climate insert. Anyone who likes the tried and tested label has to add another 150 to 200 euros on average. But the competitors also work very well, as our test procedure shows. In the wetness test, in which the textile suits have to withstand the flood of water from the nozzle of a high-pressure cleaner operating at over 100 bar, hardly anyone shows any real nakedness.

However, when the synthetic fabrics come fresh from the factory, they are literally soaked with various impregnating agents. This can be recognized by the fact that the water film on the outer skin literally rolls off and hardly penetrates to the waterproof climate membrane underneath. But this condition does not last forever, and those who are grudging about care will clearly feel it when they are shivering in a damp, damp station wagon.

Which is why you shouldn’t be afraid to regularly pack your equipment without protectors in your mom’s washing drum. Absolutely taboo with this care: fabric softeners that can be deposited on the membrane skin and have a lasting effect on function – including water flow. Rather, you should use an extra rinse that washes out all residues.

Commercially available impregnator from the spray can

A glance at the respective care label reveals whether the suit can be put in the dryer or ironed. You should do it where it is allowed: the impregnation of the fibers can be refreshed by applying heat. But if at some point that no longer helps, a commercially available impregnator from the spray can must be applied.

Normally, the climate membrane in motorcycle clothing is either glued to the textile fabric on a carrier layer (“three-layer laminate”) or hung between the outer fabric and the lining (“Z-liner”). These two fixed types of construction have the disadvantage, especially on hot days, that no fresh breeze blows through the wind- and waterproof membrane foils. The suits from this test can offer significantly more comfort in summer, in which the climate membrane and the thermal lining can be completely removed as an extra inlay. However, special care is required when driving in the rain: If you slouch when closing the partly fissured front labyrinth closures, you will quickly find yourself in the wet.
