The simple screwdriver in slotted or cross-head design is the universal family user and hand ax of the modern age, everyone needs it. Admittedly: Dentists rarely. For everyone else, we have 15 pairs of all-rounders in laboratory and practical tests.

Rothewald: There are good reasons why all other screwdrivers have a rounded handle – that’s where you press. The Louis own brand has a hexagon there. If you can live with it, you get solid goods with only a few weaknesses.

Vigor: Hazet is behind Vigor, and the Far East tool is intended to serve customers for whom the big mother is too expensive. The discount offer survives the laboratory tests almost without any problems, but leaves a few springs in the workshop practice. Okay for savers.

Wera: Wera is a force in the screwdriver market, even these “entry-level models” show what know-how the Wuppertal people have. The bottom line is that the “very good” is missed by a hair’s breadth. If you don’t need a lot of equipment, this is the place for you.

Wiha: You notice the “electrician background” – an area in which Wiha is very strong: These screwdrivers are also rather slim and slim, not “force tools” for gross motor skills. Many points in all categories give the top grade.

Wisent: The Bauhaus own brand is an insider tip for some professional screwdrivers – which this test confirms. Those who can do without equipment get a lot of tools for little money with the screwdrivers, which also shine in the laboratory – best buy.

After the individual presentation, we summarize the results in this table.
With the tested tool you won’t break anything if you use it properly and you don’t endanger your health, because some candidates showed slight weaknesses in the three laboratory disciplines, but there was no total failure. This gives the test field plenty of points and ensures that no test result is worse than “satisfactory” in the end.

Help: Usually, a hexagon on the upper end of the blade serves as a receptacle for supporting wrenches.

Penetration: A strong blow on the head of the blade often helps to loosen jammed screws.

But if that doesn’t work, rescue is near: Adhesion enhancement pastes such as “screw doctor” save screwed-up screws.

Orion: The second own brand (besides Atorn) of the renowned workshop outfitter Hahn + Kolb is supposed to serve the price-sensitive customers – and does it quite well. Not a high-flyer tool, but hard-working collecting points pays off.

Two professionals from TuV Rheinland (correctly: from TuV Rheinland LGA Products GmbH) provided MOTORRAD with significant support in the screwdriver test. But the engineers Berthold Tempel (54) and Frank Holdinghausen (43) also gave MOTORRAD shopping tips. Most importantly, if the tool stinks, keep your hands off it.

Klaus Herder

Of course, word has meanwhile also got around in the MOTORRAD editorial office that the common slotted screw is rarely found on modern two-wheelers. And the Japanese (!) Phillips screw, learned to hate by today’s over 40s, is a discontinued model, which hexagon socket (“Allen”), Torx and other multi-toothed screws have long outstripped in modern vehicle construction. But that doesn’t change the fact that everyday screwdrivers at home – and that’s not just limited to motorcycling – are still regularly used for slotted and Phillips screwdrivers.

The slotted screwdriver is probably the most frequently misused tool in world history. Chisels, chisels, levers, scrapers – apart from welding work there is probably no task that poor Schlitzi is not expected to do. If the device suffers, then of course nobody wants it to have been. That doesn’t change the fact that replacements have to be procured every now and then – which brings us to the first reason for this story.

Not all screwdrivers are created equal

The potential for abuse is not quite as pronounced with Phillips screwdrivers, but there is a high chance that the wrong tool will be used from the outset. Could you explain the difference between PH and PZ right away? Of course, but ask your buddy.

In any case, the Phillips-head screw is still found quite often on the somewhat older motorcycle, and anyone who has ever had the pleasure of manually screwing a full fairing that feels like 86 screws on again will know that screwdrivers are not just screwdrivers. And already we have the second test reason. Hardcore tool junkies will probably find fault with the fact that their favorite brand is not there. A little tip: Make the responsible sales department aware of the greater Stuttgart area, then it might work next time.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

An engineer turns the wheel: torque test bench with a fixed victim

MOTORRAD bought the test samples anonymously in July and August 2015 from specialist dealers, in hardware stores and in vehicle accessories shops in the greater Stuttgart area. The prices actually paid are mentioned, not the MSRPs. One set of test samples remained in the editorial office for a practical test, a second set went to TuV Rheinland in Cologne.

There, the screwdrivers were precisely measured using a front-light projector and caliper (dimensional accuracy), clamped in a torque test stand and twisted until the tip broke (twist test) and sawed, cast in acrylic, polished and impressed with a diamond (Rockwell hardness test).

Shadow play: The incident light projector reveals whether all dimensions fit exactly.

In addition to the data and measured values mentioned, the TuV engineers also determined other data, which, however, were all in the green area and are therefore not listed separately. In order to get the full number of points in the laboratory tests, the value determined in each case had to be in the range of the standard specification.

The corresponding standards are: DIN ISO 8764-1 Tab. 1 (thickness at the Phillips screwdriver tip), DIN ISO 2380-1 Tab. 1 (width and thickness of the slotted screwdriver tip), DIN ISO 2380-1 5.1 and 8761-1 4.2 (Rockwell hardness test in the area of the tip), DIN ISO 2380-1 5.2 and 8761-1 6 (maximum torque transmitted until the tip breaks). The practical tests were carried out by three MOTORRAD test editors and a MOTORRAD workshop professional on their own.

Conclusion: The second own brand (besides Atorn) of the renowned workshop outfitter Hahn + Kolb is supposed to serve the price-sensitive customers – and does it quite well. Not a high-flyer tool, but hard-working collecting points pays off.

Conclusion: One notices the “electrician background” – an area in which Wiha is very strong: These screwdrivers are also rather slim and slim, not “force tools” for gross motor skills. Many points in all categories give the top grade.

Screwdriver tips

Last help: Adhesion improvement pastes like “screw doctor” save screwed up screws

The realization that using the wrong tool can damage screws and screwdrivers is not really surprising. Only outspoken idiots would try again and again to loosen a 12 screw with a 13 mm jaw. However, a frightening number of hobbyists are not aware that there are two fundamentally different Phillips screw shapes, each of which requires its own tool. In the vehicle sector, the older Phillips shape is used almost exclusively and thus the “normal” Phillips screwdriver as we know it. It has four flanks that taper at a 45-degree angle – and nothing else! Phillips cross-head screwdrivers have a PH in front of the size.

For example PH 2, the most common and also tested Phillips screwdriver. A further development of the aforementioned Phillips recess cross-head screw (that’s the official name) is the Phillips Pozidriv cross-head screw. The screwdriver and the associated screwdriver have no place in vehicle construction, but are often used in other trades, for example in house interior design. Pozidriv screwdrivers have a PZ in front of the size, the flanks are not tapered, and there are additional “mini flanks” in the corners. The right screws are relatively easy to recognize by their additional, not quite as deep diagonal slots, which gives the whole thing a “star look”.

mps photo studio

Please do not confuse: a Phillips screwdriver (PH) on the left, a Pozidriv screwdriver (PZ) on the right.

If you work on a PH screw with a PZ screwdriver (and vice versa), you will very quickly ruin both the screw and the tool. The same also applies if you work with a slotted screwdriver that is too narrow. The most important screwdriver rule (besides the PH / PZ distinction): Always use the largest possible screwdriver that fits fully into the screw head. Slotted screwdrivers must always be at least the width of the screw slot. A little too wide does not matter, the first step to the screwed-up screw is too narrow.

Also very important: put a lot of pressure on the screw. 80 percent for printing, 20 percent for turning – you are usually right. But if the screw and / or tool is screwed up and the blade keeps turning out of the slot without the screw moving, adhesive enhancement pastes such as “screw doctor” (20 ml tube around 13 to 15 euros – lasts forever) can help be the last resort. The pastes, which are reminiscent of toothpaste in their consistency (and actually work that way), use a large number of tiny grinding tools to ensure that the tool and screw interlock and then usually get things moving.

Tips from TuV

Herder

Still in a good mood: Messrs. Tempel (left) and Holdinghausen.

MOTORCYCLE: Keyword buying a screwdriver: What should the customer pay attention to first when he stands in front of the screwdriver shelf in the hardware store?

TuV Rheinland: First of all, he should smell the tool. If it stinks, keep your hands off it.

MOTORCYCLE: What does it mean if the part smells very badly?

TuV Rheinland: Then it could contain prohibited substances that are suspected of being carcinogenic. These substances can then get into the body through prolonged skin contact. These are so-called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAH for short. This does not necessarily have to be the case, but if in doubt it is better not to buy.

MOTORRAD: Why do some manufacturers do this??

TuV Rheinland: There are two reasons. First of all, it’s about getting UV stability in. The plastic and rubber parts are colored beautifully black with carbon black. Second, a plasticizer effect is achieved. Rubber is inherently a porous material, and adding carbon black is the easiest and cheapest way to make it soft.

MOTORCYCLE: Do you have any more tips for the baffled in the hardware store standing around?

TuV Rheinland: The best thing to do is to pick up the tool and check carefully whether it is comfortable to hold. Even better: do some screwing tests, some hardware stores and specialist dealers offer this. Often you only notice after a few screws whether it hurts or not. Corrugated surfaces can be a blessing, but also cause pain in the long run.

MOTORCYCLE: What role does the country of origin play?

TuV Rheinland: In the case of products made in Europe, the probability is relatively high that the product at least complies with the standard. Most companies have an internal quality assurance system. But there are also very good tools from the Far East – but the customer cannot avoid trying them out personally.

Final scoring

15 pairs of screwdrivers in a comparison test

mps photo studio

Overview of the comparison test.

The big scandal did not materialize: at least with the tested tool, you won’t break anything if you use it properly and you won’t endanger your health either, because some candidates showed slight weaknesses in the three laboratory disciplines, but there was no total failure. This gives the test field plenty of points and ensures that no test result is worse than “satisfactory” in the end.

Whether the respective tool is also satisfactory in everyday screwdriving is another matter. It is worth taking a closer look at the “Workshop practice” column and the summary boxes to find your very own personal favorite. Far from all point tables, the MOTORRAD tool testers also unofficially chose their “test winner of the heart”: The names Hazet, Felo, KS Tools and Gedore appeared very often. Final procurement tip: understand it yourself in the truest sense of the word before buying.
