BMW will continue to compete with the works team in the Superbike World Championship in 2021. Two new satellite teams bring reinforcements. Both teams will each field a BMW M 1000 RR.

In the Superbike World Championship 2021, four BMWs will compete for each race instead of the previous two. In addition to the well-known works team around Tom Sykes and Michael van der Mark, the two satellite teams RC Squadra Corse from Italy and the Bonovo Action team from Germany will also compete in 2021.

Laverty and Folger as drivers

Jonas Folger will compete in the Superbike World Championship on a BMW in 2021.

RC Squadra Corse starts with Eugene Laverty. The 34-year-old Northern Irishman was allowed to grip the handlebars of the BMW works team last season. In addition to his work in the WSBK, Laverty will also be active as a BMW test driver. As expected, Bonovo Action continues its successful cooperation with driver Jonas Folger (GER). Both teams are closely involved as BMW satellite teams BMW motorcycle Motorsport and the factory superbike team work together.

“Working with satellite teams is another important step in our commitment to the FIM Superbike World Championship”, says Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad. “It’s great to have two more BMW M 1000 RRs in the field next season, in addition to the two motorcycles from our works team, the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team with riders Tom Sykes and Michael van der Mark. I warmly welcome the two satellite teams to our WorldSBK project. In the Bonovo Action Team with Jonas Folger, a German team with a Bavarian rider on a Bavarian motorcycle is competing for the first time as a permanently registered team in the WorldSBK. That is a special combination. I am also very pleased that Eugene Laverty remains a permanent member of our BMW family and that he is now bringing his skills and knowledge of BMW Superbikes to our newly established, but already well-known satellite team RC Squadra Corse in the World Superbike Paddock. I wish everyone a successful WorldSBK 2021 season!”

Both teams with a lot of experience

Team RC Squadra Corse around team owner Roberto Colombo will operate under a new name from 2021, but has long been present in the World Superbike Paddock. The team has been active in the Superbike World Championship since 2016, and also competed in the Supersport World Championship in 2020.

The Bonovo Action team is led by team owner Jurgen Roder and team manager Michael Galinski. In 2020 the team dominated the International German Motorcycle Championship IDM with Folger. Folger won all eight races of the IDM season and was crowned champion with ease. In addition, the team and Folger competed at the two WorldSBK events in Barcelona (ESP) and Estoril (POR), where the team and driver impressed with strong performances. The now 27-year-old Folger began his international career in 2008 and competed in all classes of the MotoGP World Championship in the following years, from the 125cc, which later became Moto3, to Moto2 and MotoGP.

Conclusion

BMW positions itself more broadly in the Superbike World Championship and gives Jonas Folger a chance on an M 1000 RR in a satellite team.
