The biggest motorcycle test in 2014 as well

The MOTORRAD Alpen-Masters celebrates its 10th birthday in 2014. 20 motorcycles were primarily tested for steering precision, handling and braking. You can find out here how the motorcycles, the route and the test procedure were selected. The tests in the individual categories follow.

Gert Thole, Eva Breutel

07/03/2014

“Everything done right,” tester Karsten Schwers is usually relieved to say when things go smoothly at the Alpine Masters. This is particularly important this year, because nothing should disturb the anniversary: For the tenth time, MOTORRAD, together with several European partner magazines, has identified the King of the Alps from 20 models – the motorcycle that masters the casual sprint over steep climbs just as well as radical emergency braking downhill, which can easily handle sharp hairpin bends as well as wild faults in the asphalt. Until the winner is determined, the test crew has their hands full, because getting 20 motorcycles, including test equipment and appropriate driver equipment, into the high mountains requires long-term organization. There are still imponderables, however, because sudden snowfall in the Alps can upset even the most detailed plans in no time at all.

But the weather plays well with the tenth Alpine Masters, blazing sunshine melts the snow on the mighty peaks of Marmolada, Langkofel and Sella massif. In the middle of the Dolomites, with the famous winter sports resort Canazei as the starting point, Europe’s largest comparative test will take place this year. The Alpine Masters has already made a guest appearance here twice, namely in 2009 and 2010. At that time, the test crew struggled with rain and sleet, but were still fascinated by the test conditions in the area, which is not considered one of the favorite destinations of European motorcyclists for nothing. In the heart of the Dolomites, pass after pass, winding curves and tight hairpin bends change in a heated rhythm. Unlike in the French Maritime Alps or around the Stilfser Joch, where the Alpine Masters also took place a few times in the past, there are no breaks for the motorbikes on long, straight passages in the valley. In the Dolomites, it becomes clear in no time whether a motorcycle will master the Alps – or not.

Steering precision, handling and braking

In order to work out the qualities in the mountains, MOTORRAD is changing the usual evaluation scheme for the Alpine Masters. Warranty, maintenance costs or top speed are irrelevant, but the driving dynamics are all the more important. These include above all steering precision, handling and of course the brakes, especially downhill. Unmoved, the testers bring every motorcycle to its physical limits and the passenger occasionally to its psychological limits, because the brake measurement often ends in a steep stoppie – which quickly gives the motorcycle in question points. In the mountains, the pulling power is also extremely important, which is measured twice during the test in the Alps: uphill, which corresponds to accelerating out of the hairpin, and also at a height of 2000 meters – because who wants to overtake shortly before the pass of a motorhome to starve because the engine suddenly pounds in the mountain air?

This rating, specially adapted to the mountain world, was developed for the first Alpine Masters in 2005 and largely retained. In the meantime, the test candidates in particular have changed. Back then, only eight out of 20 motorcycles had ABS, but now there is only one model without the anti-lock braking system, namely the Moto Guzzi V7 Special. There was no trace of traction control, riding modes or electronic chassis in 2005, but four pure-bred super athletes fought for the title of Alpine King – a category that is missing nowadays, because the manufacturers in this segment are meanwhile in this segment due to a lack of approval from customers buttoned. Admittedly, no super athlete ever made it to the King of the Alps.

The 20 motorcycles compete against each other in five groups that are as homogeneous as possible; the first-placed move into the final. There, for once, the test crew throws their objectivity overboard: The experienced testers from home and abroad are allowed to create their own personal ranking lists. The motorbike that receives the most votes will be the Alpenkonig – and it will also do everything right.

MOTORCYCLE test machines

Every year it is the tricky task of test boss Gert Thole and his crew to put together the 20 motorcycles for the Alpine Masters. This is tricky because the testers cannot choose according to their mood, because only brand-new and revised models and motorcycles that have never had to prove themselves in this mega-comparison are eligible to compete. Like that KTM 1190 Adventure, because last year’s Alpine Masters featured the R variant. So this year for the first time the basic model is included, which should bring a lot of momentum to the group.

Once the 20 motorcycles have been selected, the next challenge is to divide them into suitable groups. Anything but easy, as there are more and more cross-over models that cannot be clearly assigned. Just one example: is the Honda VFR 800 F a touring bike, a fun bike or something for beginners? After lengthy deliberations, it ended up in the “Touring” group. The classification of some other motorcycles was also controversial, but in the end homogeneous groups came about. In consideration of the many foreign magazines that take part in the Alpine Masters or reprint the test, the five groups were given English names this time, namely Beginner, Power, Fun, Touring and Adventure.

The test track

2014: 10 years of MOTORRAD Alpine Masters

BILLION

Up and down, gladly again and again – and particularly gladly on the Pordoi: altitude profile of the test track.

Instead of the well-known Sella circuit, there is an even more varied Ladin circuit: for exactly 100 kilometers, the test route leads largely through the Ladin area, a small ethnic minority in the Dolomites. The starting point is the hotel “La Cacciatora” in Canazei in Trentino. The four-star hotel offers exquisite cuisine, a luxurious wellness area and a huge garage, the Ladin hotelier family Planchensteiner speaks Italian as well as German. The gentle curves up to the Fedaia Pass are used for entering. The lake of the same name looks breathtaking together with the Marmolada glacier; But you shouldn’t be too distracted, because after the top of the pass it goes steeply downhill in often slippery hairpin bends.

Behind this meander is the first measurement section with a 15 percent incline (draft) or incline (braking). After a short stretch of valley, behind Sottoguda, a narrow lane with unlit tunnels winds towards the Falzarego pass. At the subsequent Passo di Valparola with its magnificent panorama, the measuring point for the passage is at an altitude of 2000 meters. The varied descent ends in a long straight in the San Cassiano valley and then rushes via La Villa to Corvara, where a wintry mudslide had severely damaged the surface. The rather inconspicuous Passo di Campolongo is mainly used to get to the Pordoi, one of the most spectacular Alpine passes of all. In a flowing curve dance, 60 bends are lined up on the east and west ramps – uncompromising, demanding and simply ingenious. Tip: Avoid the months of July and August, because then coach caravans sneak over the heights of the pass and brake the forward thrust enormously.
