Do you also speak of that “Double card”? You are not alone in this, because the double card has firmly established itself as an insurance confirmation in the parlance of Germany’s car and motorcycle drivers. Half of the folded postcard was used to remain in the files of the registration office, and the other half to be sent back from the office to the insurance company. Quasi as an enforcement notification: Vehicle was approved on the Soundovalten. The old-fashioned paper version no longer exists today. For some years now, anyone who wants to register a car or motorcycle again or after the winter break has needed the so-called eVB, the electronic insurance confirmation, consisting of a seven-digit code made up of letters and numbers, instead of the double card from their insurer as proof of compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance.

The change primarily led to time savings. For the vehicle owner. Because since the introduction, he no longer has to wait in the post office for the double card. The confirmation code for an existing insurance contract is transmitted either by e-mail, by SMS on the mobile phone or, quite simply, by telephone: just call, have the code given, write it down on a piece of paper and go to the registration office – a matter of minutes. If you have all the necessary documents ready at the office, the re-registration of a motorcycle is a piece of cake. Or better: a matter of clicks. The registration office can access the central database of German motor vehicle insurers online and, with the help of the insurance code, immediately has the necessary insurance information and the personal data of the vehicle owner on the screen.

Stamped license plate counts as proof of insurance

Anyone who takes the deregistered motorcycle to the registration office in order to officially put the bike back into operation there (such a journey is legal provided that it takes place on the most direct and shortest route and that an assigned number plate is attached to the motorcycle), only needs to be able to name the insurance confirmation in the event of a check The police also have online access to the data memory for control purposes. The declared long-term goal of the changeover is online registration, which in a few years’ time should make it possible to temporarily shut down vehicles or put them back into operation without having to visit the office. This could be particularly advantageous for motorcyclists. Because in order to save taxes and insurance, many sign off the bike over the winter.

But that too costs time and money. What you can save yourself with the alternative season license plate, but it determines when you can use the bike and when not. No additional proof of insurance is required after admission. In Germany, as in 26 other EU member states, the stamped license plate serves as proof of insurance. You only need the so-called green insurance card for trips outside of these countries (free of charge from your own motor vehicle liability insurance). In addition to having the necessary documents ready when registering, you should also check other factors that will save you time when registering: For example, if your bike has been de-registered for more than ten years, a full acceptance by the TuV is necessary, and for vehicles from abroad, too a declaration of no objection from the tax office.
