In the ninth generation, the GoPro has grown again.

In our comparison test, it offers by far the best image quality and impressive image stabilization.

The Blackhawk + 4K is aimed primarily at drivers who are out and about in sunshine and who take it easy. Landscape shots look great, action-packed shots or twilight are not their forte.

The Phantom 4K is uncomplicated, with good image quality and ample scope of delivery. Image stabilization is good, but not perfect. A shame: The remote control came with an empty battery, plastic and rubber were sometimes brittle.

The modular Insta360 One R with the combination of Leica lens and 1-inch sensor enables very nice videos, even in poor light. The app is great, but using it by touch or voice is sometimes annoying.

Accessories are rarely included, but there is a very large selection in the shop.

The One R also enables detailed recordings with the 4K adapter. At dusk it has to admit defeat to the 1-inch version, but it is also significantly cheaper. The app is both a curse and a blessing.

The feel and operation of the Rollei 9s Plus convey a great first impression, but the end result is disappointing with a noisy, low-contrast and over-sharpened image. A better sensor and the camera would be great.

The Somikon NX6101 cannot do real 4K, so the image quality leaves a lot to be desired. The lack of image stabilization also costs points. For a real market price of less than 60 euros, it still offers a lot for the money.

“Action” and “Cam” – with our 7 test candidates, films are not everything, they also have to work in action. So MOTORRAD didn’t just limit itself to laboratory tests for resolution.

The Mio MiVue M760D impresses with its good image quality, especially at dusk. Almost 30 seconds before the recording starts is too long. We also really like the MiVue Manager software for the PC.

In fresh orange and with a large display on the main unit, the Rollei M1 sets itself apart from its competitors. The image quality is good, the adjustability on the display is a bit of consolation for the lack of an Android app.

20/20
The large cameras make an impression, but do not bring any real advantages in terms of image quality. On the other hand, we liked the Thinkware M1 Sports Cam with the best sound and the fastest start time in the test. The cables are unnecessarily long.

The fact that only ten small cameras take part in our current test of action cameras shows how fiercely competitive the market is and how difficult it is for GoPro to keep up with its competitors. The industry leader is not only good in advertising, but actually convinces with high-quality, well-thought-out and technically advanced products. Of course, other providers also try this, sometimes with careful success. Nevertheless, even big names such as Panasonic, Olympus, Nikon, Kodak and Drift have withdrawn from this area in recent years. Even providers of very good action cams such as Sony, DJI and Yi Technology prefer to invest their development budget in other products.

  • the GoPro* has convinced in the comparison test with the best image quality and an impressive image stabilization is ours Test winner.

  • Two cams could be used as Buying tip convince with the best price-performance ratio, the Rollei M1 motorcycle dash cam and the Thinkware M1 Sports Cam.

At the same time, however, new players were added, especially Insta360 brings a refreshing breeze to this segment with the modular One R, which is available in different versions. And where not so long ago numerous low-cost providers threw technically identical cameras onto the market under their own label, the range on eBay, Amazon and Co. has now become significantly smaller.

Price 193.99 euros *; Weight 127 g (194 g with waterproof case); Sensor 1 / 2.5 inch, 8.51 MP; key recording modes 4K60, 1080p120, 720p240, 8 MP photos; Screen Two-inch touchscreen, 1.33-inch front color display; Battery 1000 mAh; Interfaces Micro-USB, Micro-HDMI, WLAN, Bluetooth; Special features 1/4″-Tripod connection, remote control

Service: Touch operation works very well; in a protective housing, easy to operate via three buttons; Videos and photos can also be recorded using the remote control

Image quality / image stabilization: Despite 4K, the resolution looks very grainy and not very detailed; Image stabilization is very good when rolling sideways, but overwhelmed with pitch and yaw movements and vibrations

good adjustment options; many modes; good second display; waterproof without housing; ready for use very quickly

Image quality poor; no longer an Android app; Image stabilization severely crops the image

Conclusion: Haptics and operation of the 9s Plus convey a great first impression, but the end result disappoints with a noisy, low-contrast and over-sharpened image. A better sensor and the camera would be great.

Image quality / image stabilization: not really 4K, but picture quality is okay with enough light and calm movement

front display for selfie shots; reliable record; uncomplicated app

4K resolution only extrapolated, 60 frames per second only in Full HD (1920 x 1080); Image quality poor; no image stabilization; App and camera display cannot be used at the same time; bad translation of menu items

Conclusion: The Somikon NX6101 cannot do real 4K, so the image quality leaves a lot to be desired. The lack of image stabilization also costs points. For a real market price of less than 60 euros, it still offers a lot for the money.

MOTORCYCLE buying tip: Rollei M1 motorcycle dash cam

Price 233.85 euros *; Total weight 557 g; Dust and moisture protection IP 67 (camera), IP 65 (main unit)

Cameras: Sensor 1 / 2.9 inch, 2.12 MP; Recording mode 2 x 1080p30; Dimensions 50 x 25 x 25 mm each; Cable length each 270 cm; Main unit: dimensions 108 x 59 x 21 mm, cable length 280 cm; Remote control: cable length 270 cm, dimensions 40 x 40 x 20 mm, functions: buttons for taking photos, microphone and for locking the file, status LED

Particularities: Main unit with three-inch IPS display, video stabilization, G-sensor, WiFi, GPS, app for iOS

very wide field of vision; Can be operated conveniently on the main unit; Control also via app; Camera can be used without an extension cable; Time to start recording: 11 seconds

Display switches off when using the app; Color cast; Cannot find Android app

Conclusion: In fresh orange and with a large display on the main unit, the Rollei M1 sets itself apart from its competitors. The image quality is good, the adjustability on the display is a bit of consolation for the lack of an Android app.

Thinkware M1 Sports Cam

MOTORRAD test winner: Thinkware M1 Sports Cam

Price around 400 euros *; Total weight: 682 g; Dust and moisture protection IP 66

Cameras: Sensor 1 / 2.8 inch, 2.1 MP; Recording mode 2 x 1080p30, dimensions 75 x 37 x 37 mm each, cable length 170 cm (front), 125 cm (rear); Main unit: dimensions 120 x 75 x 28 mm, cable length 150 cm, remote control: cable length 200 cm, dimensions 50 x 40 x 15 mm, functions: button for video recording, button for WLAN, status LED, microphone

Particularities: Video stabilization, night vision, gyro sensor, WiFi, GPS, app for Android and iOS

adjustable via software on the PC; recorded image can be rotated when installed upside down; Integrated image stabilization; Night vision mode; Time to start recording: 9 seconds

quite large and bulky cameras; the entire length of the cable must be stowed away

Conclusion: The large cameras make an impression, but do not bring any real advantages in terms of image quality. On the other hand, we liked the M1 Sports Cam with the best sound and the fastest start time in the test. The cables are unnecessarily long.

The legal situation

Dashcams were developed for use in road traffic and are even mandatory in some countries. In Germany, however, the right to privacy has priority, which is why dashcams try to impair this as little as possible. This should be achieved with only short recordings that are overwritten one after the other when the storage space runs out. This is not legally completely watertight either, but it is a good compromise solution. In road traffic, dash cams have further advantages over action cams due to the fixed power supply.

Filming in private rooms and for private purposes is permitted, for example with your own family or with friends (each with consent). It is also allowed to record and publish landscapes or your own sports “Exploits”, as long as no other persons and their rights are affected. Using a camera in road traffic, on the other hand, violates Section 6b of the Federal Data Protection Act, since the data of other road users are recorded without being asked in public traffic areas and thus outside of private areas. However, this right to informational self-determination on the part of other road users is also opposed to the interests of the filmmaker – at least if they want to prove their innocence after an accident. In this case, he can refer to the Basic Law (e.g. Art. 2.2 and Art. 103.1); his right to a fair hearing prevails, i.e. a substantive assessment of his point of view in court. For this purpose, material recorded by a camera can also be used – with the somewhat curious consequence that the film material is admitted as evidence for the end of the film, but at the same time he can be subject to a not inconsiderable fine. Under the principle of establishing the truth, unlawfully filmed material can therefore be taken into account – but also against the end of the film, for example when speeding is exceeded.

Data, facts & Terms

The products have terms such as inch, 4K60, 1080p, 20 MP, 120 fps, Mbit / s, and H.265. But what does it mean in each case and what should you pay attention to when buying? First of all, there is this Sensor size: The specification 1 inch (= 1 inch = 2.54 cm) refers to its diagonal. The Insta360 1-inch has the largest sensor, the GoPro is 1 / 2.3 inches, i.e. 1.1 cm. Larger sensors do not necessarily offer higher resolutions (in Megapixels, MP), but tend to have lower noise images in low light. A good sensor can also capture larger light-dark differences. For a good image quality, it is also given in Mbit per second Bit rate important (100 Mbit / s are now up to date), as well as File format and codec, in which the video will be saved. MP4 with the compression H.264 or space-saving, but also computationally intensive H.265 is common. 4K stands for the resolution: The higher the resolution, the more details can be displayed. A combination such as 2.7K120 adds an indication of the resolution to the resolution frames per second (fps). The camera should be able to at least 60 fps.

Conclusion

We got two main lessons. First: Expensive action cams often have higher quality technology, which is why they do better in the test. Second: GoPro is rightly the industry leader. Experience and the closeness to extreme athletes are noticeable in the range of functions and in the detailed solutions. The lead in terms of image and sound recording, image stabilization and operation are remarkable. Unfortunately, the cheap Phantom 4K showed weaknesses with its lavish accessories, otherwise it would have ended up high with its great image quality.

The three dashcams all do a good, reliable job. If you want a dashcam despite legal concerns, you can’t go wrong with all three.
