ADAC helmet test 2018 full-face helmets from 160 to 600 euros

Full-face helmets in the ADAC helmet test 2018
9 candidates from 160 to 600 euros

Does the low weight of full-face helmets come at the expense of safety and comfort? The ADAC has thoroughly tested nine models at prices between 160 and almost 600 euros. A helmet fell through.

Uli Baumann

06/29/2018

When a motorcycle helmet weighs little, the neck and neck muscles are happy – especially on long tours or during sporty laps on the racetrack. The nine helmets in the ADAC test field weighed between 1,265 and 1,527 grams.

The ADAC test result is mixed. 3 times “Good”, 3 times “satisfying”, twice “sufficient” and even once “inadequate”. In the most important discipline, of all things, the impact test, three candidates (Nishua, Scorpion, NEXX) could not convince, one even failed completely.

So was tested

The ADAC extensively tested the impact resistance of the helmets at several points, not just at those points that are to be tested according to the UNECE-R 22.05 standard. Background: A helmet almost never fails at the standard impact points, because these known points are sufficient on the part of the manufacturer “prepared” become.

ADAC helmet test 2018 full-face helmets from 160 to 600 euros

ADAC

Impact points defined by laser.

However, it is important to the ADAC that helmets provide protection everywhere; therefore the ADAC test also includes impact tests elsewhere, for example on the back of the head. While the two “sufficient” rated helmets “only” failed at ADAC impact points, the losing helmet NEXX failed several times at a standardized impact point on the chin guard.

Otherwise, the ADAC has little to report unpleasant. On the one hand, that manufacturers like to cheat on the weight and that some helmets are up to 150 grams heavier than advertised on stickers. On the other hand, that the testers judged all helmets to be fundamentally too loud. 85 dB (A) sound pressure measured several times at a speed of 100 (with this noise you would have to wear ear protection at the workplace!) Are simply too much.

The positive findings: The headguards are easy to use across the board and are rainproof (except for the X-Lite and HJC). Fogging on the inside of the visors is no longer an issue thanks to the included or easy-to-install pinlock discs. Commendable: Five models already have novel, quickly removable ones “Emergency cheek pads”, which make it much easier to remove a helmet after an accident.
