Italy gives incentives to buy

Airbags integrated into motorcycle clothing can often mitigate the consequences of accidents. Italy now wants to give tax incentives to the purchase of airbag protective clothing.

On December 27, 2020, the Italian government passed a regulation that provides financial support for the purchase of airbag clothing for motorcyclists. However, this has not yet been worked out in detail.

The funding program provides that motorcyclists who buy ECE-certified safety clothing with integrated airbags can offset part of the purchase price for tax purposes. An exact value is not yet given, but a first draft speaks of one “substantial deduction”. However, observers assume an amount between 20 and 50 percent of the purchase price.

Architect fights for motorcyclist safety

The regulation that has now been passed goes back to an initiative by the Italian architect Graziella Viviano. The Roman had lost her daughter in a two-wheel accident in 2018. Since then she has been campaigning for the safety of motorcyclists. One aspect is the wide range of airbag clothing available. Viviano is supported by the motorcycle rider association Legal Rider. The general willingness of the government to support the purchase of airbag protective clothing can only be a first small step on the way to more safety for motorcyclists, emphasizes Viviano. Now the regulation must be implemented quickly and the funding must be as high as possible.

Would you use an airbag system?

Voted 880 times

Yes, in any case.

No, normal protector and safety equipment is sufficient.

Conclusion

Motorcyclists should do everything for their safety. Airbag clothing is one way of doing this. However, such equipment is expensive. The Italian way that has now been mapped out is one way of quickly spreading airbag technology. The initiative for this comes from the ranks of those affected. Now the interest groups should take up the ball to establish appropriate buying incentives in this country as well.
