This is where the fun ends: on a closed snow cover, only coarse tires help in the search for traction

Turkey is not exactly known as a classic motorcycle or winter sports country. Nevertheless, a winter tire for motorcycles comes from there.

According to winter tire pioneer Heidenau (reifenwerk-heidenau.com), which has the appropriate material especially for scooters and enduros, is now offered by the Turkish manufacturer Anlas (Distribution Alpha Technik, www.alphatechnik.de) also M + S tires with the snowflake symbol. And that even up to the usual dimensions 120/70 and 180/55 17 ZR 17, while Heidenau ends at 160/60 at the back. The German manufacturer has different, also coarse-tread variants in the program, while Anlas limits itself to one profile type that comes very close to conventional road tires. With a high silica content and lamellae similar to those of winter car tires, the starter should offer secure grip in cold, wet winter conditions.

That, of course, wanted to be tested. And on the occasion also what is possible on a closed snow cover. But so much in advance: Even with the Winter Grip Plus, there is not much to order on a closed snow cover. The quasi-closed profile in the middle is quickly clogged with snow. The ability to transmit power, whether when braking or accelerating, is almost zero. The lamellae, which provide toothing and grip in car tires, are located on the flank when the vehicle is started and are used on slight inclines and therefore not in snow. Anyone who dares to venture out on the road in such conditions cannot avoid rough terrain.

Freezing temperatures

But what about ice-cold, slightly damp roads? When the temperatures are below freezing? It was minus two degrees on our attempt. The event cuts a fine figure under these conditions. It delivers grip from the first meter and also communicates this to the driver. It is more unwieldy than manoeuvrable standard tires and appears to be slightly wobbly when it is leaned over a large angle. But where it matters, it shines with a lot of self-damping and inspires confidence from the first corner. For example, during daily transport to work, in short-distance traffic. At the same time, we tried out the event on typical city runabouts such as the Honda MSX 125 and a Kymco Movie S 125i. The experiences on the City-Hoppers are the same as those on the Triumph. Grip from the first meter, not super handy, but lots of self-cushioning. And thus made for stress-free commuting between work and home or a city trip.

The skill “normal” But also tires with excellent cold grip, for example the Metzeler Roadtec 01, which we drove for comparison, or a Michelin Pilot Road 4. And that with better high-speed stability.
