Aprilia 1000 RSV4 RR 2016

As soon as it was released, the Aprilia RSV4 has carved out a reputation as an almost perfect tracker. The only hypersport powered by a 4-cylinder V, a real tool for the circuit, very high-level efficiency and the finest very racy machine, Noale’s sports car aroused only praise and almost fantasy.. The taste of over-the-counter Superbike !

The only concern (and again) was pure potency. The V4 sends big, very big, but not enough to go for the one who wins a little everything, the Kawasaki ZX-10R and its 200 nags. Aprilia corrects this deficiency in 2015 by boosting the engine and making a lot of general improvements. The missile wants to hit harder, and is now called RSV4 RR. A simple little letter added? This R more is synonymous with 17 added horsepower in the boiler and bits of Factory. With those extra watts, this 1000 proudly advertises 201 horsepower at 13,000 rpm. And enter the circle of demonic powers. Yesterday, there were only two or three exceptional machines spitting out so much power (Desmosedici RR, 1199 Superleggera, F4 CC, …). Now, it is a standard that is slowly settling in 2015 (Aprilia RSV4 RR, YamahaR1, Kawasaki ZX-10R, Ducati 1299, MV-Agusta F4 1000 RR, BMW S 1000 RR).

How did Noale’s motor gain so many watts? With a host of little improved details. Engineers reduced internal friction, improved combustion, increased maximum rpm, changed the air box, installed new upper injectors and fine-tuned the intake. The ducts are redesigned, and, this is a first for a production motorcycle, each variable intake module is managed independently. A solution from the WSBK, allowing perfect control of the intake for each cylinder. All the valves are now made of titanium, the intake one increasing to 33 mm in diameter. New camshafts save 500 gr, internal lubrication has been revised, Pankl connecting rods lose a total of 400 gr, the entire exhaust system is redesigned and a more powerful ECU takes care of engine management. The gearbox is also reworked, with ratios optimized for the new potato of the V4. The gain is not only in power but also in weight: the block has lost a total of 1.5 kg. A whole series of small improvements are recorded, from the new valve springs to the pinion. 201 cavalry units, even with 4 constructors’ titles in World Superbike over the past 5 years, it takes a lot of engine work to find them; and down to the last detail.

Having an even bigger heart had almost no influence on the design of the RSV4. It was already a beautiful machine, Aprilia did not take any risks by being satisfied to see again with a certain softness the face of its muse. New design of the mirrors and indicators inlaid in them, lower fairing barely retouched … It is mainly the triple optics that evolve – the side eyes are less stretched, and the position light is LED – and the upper part of the fairing. The protection should gain (a little) in efficiency but the gain has above all been designed for aerodynamics. Comfort is not the priority of the RSV4 RR, rather total control of the track. So much so that it stings elements of the ex-Factory version and is reinforced in electronics.

In a way, this evolution has eaten up the old Premium version of the RSV4. We saw a little before that this RSV4-RR managed, and in a better way, the variable admission. This technique was previously reserved for the luxury RSV4, as were the magnesium housings. These factory-specific features are now part of the standard equipment. Thus, the aluminum perimeter frame now also makes it possible to modify the position of the engine, the caster angle and the pivot point of the swingarm. The latter has been lengthened by 14 mm to ensure optimal traction. A series of exclusive refinements that no competitor offers. On the other hand, no Ohlins suspensions or forged rims as standard. These treats are now offered in an optional “Race Pack” – or on the special RF series.
On the RSV4 RR, the suspensions are entrusted to Sachs, and are obviously fully adjustable. True to the call, Brembo takes care of the brakes as before. The M430 calipers are retained, biting off 320mm tracks. The rear wheel and its big 200 mm tire will be relaxed by a 220 mm disc and double piston caliper. With the reinforcement of an ABS Race, the Bosch 9MP, there will be no problem slowing down the 180 kilos (dry) of the Italian rocket. The anti-blocking weighs only 2 kilos, is supplied as standard just like the APRC pack, and can be adjustable in 3 levels or deactivated. Each of these levels can be combined with the 3 driving modes offered by Aprilia. The on-board electronics have even been reinforced with an engine brake management system.

By being one of the first to offer a serious driver assistance package, Aprilia further reduced the border between production sports cars and track machines. It must be said that his commitment and his victories in the Superbike world championship make him a sacred laboratory. Aprilia Performance Ride Control improves, becomes more progressive and adjusts to the new performance of which the RSV4 1000 RR is capable. Chips and sensors accompany you with 8-level traction control (adjustable at any time and can be deactivated), 3-setting anti-wheeling, shifter, and 3-position Launch Control to optimize starts on the track.
The RSV4 still offers 3 injection maps (Road, Sport and Track) with very explicit names; by becoming RR, it adds the RACE mode, even more typical of high-level driving. Stay in silicon and watch your smartphone. It is sometimes used to make phone calls, often to surf, navigate between apps, and with Aprilia, it will become your on-board telemetry technician. The V4-MP kit not only allows you to view your performance through data acquisition but also to intervene directly on the machine. Be careful, this is almost becoming science fiction: thanks to the phone’s GPS and active configuration, the system recognizes the position of the motorcycle on the track and can modify the electronic assistance settings according to the turn. There’s even a race assistant that can provide real-time advice to improve lap times.

The RSV4 was considered a diva of the track, descending for some from the RC30. By becoming RR, she combines all the assets to become the scarecrow of the category. With the magic of the V4, power at the top, electronics escaped from the SBK stand in Aprilia and a pure racing bike design, the 1000 RSV4 RR is a pistarde to make a eunuch hard..
History to offer even more fun, the manufacturer has launched in parallel a series limited to 500 copies, the RF. It is distinguished by the Race Pack in original equipment and a decoration inspired by the official team.
