What good are the current models?

Admittedly, flip-up helmets have only prevailed on the racetrack in the imagination of experimental MOTORRAD graphic artists, but otherwise the practical head protection has spread across the board. This comparison test clarifies what the 2015 vintage is good for.

Klaus Herder, Jorg Lohse

03/19/2015

But before everything really worked out in this comparison test, the crucial question had to be clarified within the editorial team: with or without a price limit? Because the price range for flip-up helmets is now enormous: Depending on the supply situation (special or sales), the cheapest flip-up helmets are already well below 100 euros, upwards of 500 euros and more are possible depending on the surface properties (colors, decors, carbon shells). Can you actually compare a low-budget helmet with a high-end hat at more than five times the price??

Which is why we looked at the situation from the classic motorcyclist’s perspective. The purchase wish: a flip-up helmet, should meet the current helmet standard ECE-R 22.05 and, if necessary, also be suitable for everyday use via a sun visor or a fog-free visor. If you go to the well-stocked specialist retailer, the sellers can give you a colorful number of helmets from the above price range to try on and try out. Every savvy consumer now knows well enough that expensive does not automatically mean better. In our opinion, an (arbitrarily drawn) price limit would have unnecessarily restricted the test field.

Helmets must meet the helmet standard ECE-R 22.05

And now to have a look towards the final rating: The cheapest models from this comparison test do not automatically have to give in to the much more expensive ones: In some categories, which are not so unimportant as shock absorption or weight, the price breakers are in some cases clearly ahead. And don’t really have to hide in terms of equipment either. So at the start of the 2015 season, the usual test request was sent to the industry: “MOTORRAD magazine is testing flip-up helmets and inviting you to take part with a model of your brand.”

Finally, 16 suppliers sent in their models in standard sizes M, L and XL on time for test purposes. The cheapest came from Germot and LS2 (129.90 euros each), the most expensive by Shoei and Schuberth (from 539 and 595 euros, respectively). Two flip-up helmets each in size M went straight from the editorial office in Stuttgart to TuV Rheinland in Cologne, where MOTORRAD developed a very special test procedure in collaboration with the helmet experts from the testing organization. The fact that the helmets meet the current ECE-R 22.05 helmet standard is a basic requirement for taking part in this comparison test.

In our opinion, however, a mundane follow-up test is no longer sufficient, especially since the industry controls itself precisely anyway: If a new helmet comes onto the market, competitors quickly get one and have it at test institutes such as TuV Rheinland in accordance with the ECE Investigate policy. The MOTORRAD test with the now established “Sigma post test” clearly aims towards the reality of an accident: Measurement at room temperature, side impact at low and high speed (19.8 and 27 km / h) on a guardrail carrier (“Sigma post”). A typical accident in Germany, as we are confirmed by accident researcher and biomechanic Florian Schueler, who is always on hand to advise our tests.

In addition to the protective effect, maximum comfort is also important

The flip-up helmets have another special feature that is also analyzed on the TuV test bench: Can the chin section still open after a frontal impact (this time against an ECE-compliant edge anvil)? A not insignificant property that z. B. makes it easier for first responders to take off their helmets after a crash. Three test participants failed at this test point and had to be devalued despite some excellent HIC values.

But the helmet is not only worn to fall over with it. Why, in addition to the evaluation of the passive, also the active safety plays a decisive role in the test: Does the flip-up helmet fit tightly around the head? Does it wobble or commute at a higher speed? Is the ventilation working? Does the constant booming background noise drag your concentration? In addition to the protective effect, of course, maximum comfort is just as important. What use is a bombastic HIC value if the helmet turns out to be almost inaccessible at speeds of 100 km / h? Hundreds of kilometers on country roads and expressways finally clarify how the helmets work in classic everyday motorcycle life. And in this test section, too, many an expensive candidate has to admit defeat to the cheaper competitor.

Replacement visor: clear, 19.95 euros;

Furnishing: Wind deflector on the chin, sun visor, helmet bag (normal).

Plus: Easy to put on and take off, as well as opening and closing of the chin part; full visor lock; good aerodynamics, sits stable even at high speeds; easy to use and very effective chin ventilation; Easy to use sun visor; good suitability for glasses.

Minus: No pinlock preparation, visor ventilation position too far; already very loud from country road speeds, deafening from 120 km / h; Head ventilation stiff, difficult to operate and practically without function; unsatisfactory fit, possibly strong pressure points on the sides above the ears, too loose in the cheek area; sweaty lining.

Conclusion: The outer shell shape is identical to the (almost twice as expensive) Held helmet, but the inner workings are clearly different. With these fit deficits, there is also a serious lack of comfort.

The helmets on the TuV inspection

A powerful team: helmet expert Peter Schaudt from TuV Rheinland and his legendary Sigma post.

Peter breaks everything completely

The normal motorcyclist ends up at the TuV (or another testing organization) every two years, MOTORRAD treats itself to a visit to Blue Coats at least once a year, more precisely to TuV Rheinland in Cologne. There, however, the shock absorption test bench is not about mundane re-measurement of the ECE values. A successfully completed test according to the helmet test standard ECE-R 22.05 is a basic requirement for even taking part in the helmet test and, in the opinion of MOTORRAD, only defines the minimum requirement. MOTORRAD has wanted more since 2009 and, together with TuV helmet expert Peter Schaudt and accident researcher and biomechanic Florian Schueler, has developed its own, significantly stricter standard.

The helmet continues to fall from a height of three meters, but not on an edge anvil, but on a real guardrail carrier (“Sigma post”), which often plays a tragic role in real accidents. Tests are also carried out at room temperature, not at minus 20 degrees, which is required by the ECE. The impact on the left and right side occurs at low and high speed. According to ECE, an acceleration value of 275 g is permissible in the event of an impact on the test anvil. The probe equipped with sensors forwards the g-value to a computer, which calculates the HIC-value with the help of other parameters (duration of force application). The “Head Injury Criterium” allows statements to be made about possible brain / skull injuries and, according to ECE, may not exceed 2,400. An abstract number, but above all far beyond good and bad. The MOTORRAD expert crew agrees: “In the MOTORRAD test, HIC 1000 should be feasible!”

Helmet of the future

16 flip-up motorcycle helmets in a comparison test

ABP helmet project: intended to alleviate brain injuries in the future.

Anti-rotation principle

When designing the MOTORCYCLE helmet test, we had to put the subject of “rotational acceleration” on hold. Which had to do with inadequate testing methods, among other things. However, there has now been movement in the matter. This is made possible by the research of Oliver Schimpf.

The ex-head of development of Schuberth works on the ABP concept (“Active Brain Protection”), which is intended to minimize the rotational acceleration that occurs in accidents and thus reduce the severity of the cranial brain trauma. Together with TuV Rheinland, Schimpf has developed a more realistic measurement method that MOTORRAD will include in future helmet tests. Info: www.activebrainpro tection.com.

Man and machine in the legendary “conference room dry test”.

The tester rattles …

Five of each helmet model were tested: two in size M were broken at TuV Rheinland in Cologne as part of the shock absorption test (see page 73). The other three helmets in sizes M, L and XL were sent to the south of France after the technical data had been collected. In early March near Marseille, the annual “MOTORCYCLE service test camp” with various equipment tests was on the program in spring-like temperatures. On a Triumph Street Triple 675 with flyscreen and the naked Yamaha MT-09 from the endurance test, the driving tests were carried out during the day on winding country roads and fairly fast expressways.

The evening program consisted of “dry runs”, in which the topics of fit, comfort and ease of use were deepened. These were the same issues that came up when I returned home in Stuttgart. In the legendary “conference room dry test”, the product test-trained editors who had not ended up in the south of France were asked. In addition to the topics mentioned, the focus was increasingly on equipment and processing. In addition to the official result (see final evaluation), editors and test drivers were once again allowed to choose their personal favorites with absolute subjectivity (see picture gallery).
