Such a plastic cleaner is usually no chemical witchcraft. You take some silicone oil, the kilo for five to 50 euros, depending on the quality, provide a sprayable and reasonably good-smelling compound, in which the said silicone oil only accounts for around two to five percent – and you have a supposed miracle cure, that can easily be sold for 20 to 50 euros per liter. It is not often that MOTORRAD editors hang around on business in winter car scrapyards. This time already. And that was just the beginning of a very extensive test.

Motorcycle parts? Too small area, not weathered evenly enough, so hardly comparable. In terms of material, almost identical material was found in the trusted scrapbook: an unpainted front bumper made of dyed-through plastic for a Ford Fiesta, built in 1996. It landed in the laboratory of Alfred Karcher GmbH, thoroughly cleaned, together with the test samples purchased in the Stuttgart area at the beginning of December & Co. KG in Winnenden. The cleaning equipment professionals around laboratory manager Frank Ritscher (motorcyclist, BMW R 1200 GS) have been experts for many years when it comes to chemistry in MOTORRAD tests.

Said bumper was treated with the plastic care products segment by segment and according to the manufacturer’s specifications and, after an hour of rest, was assessed visually and, for verification, also with a gloss level measuring device. The test areas had to withstand intensive irrigation in two ten-minute runs, interrupted by a one-hour drying phase. ABS strips treated with the test products were also bathed in a container with standard test dirt. What got stuck allowed statements about the “Dirt adhesion” and thus the tendency to re-soiling.
