The old shock absorber is not only dirty, but also leaking. There is no longer any trace of damping.

Quite dangerous: when changing the stoppers, the linings came off the carrier plates.

After 27 years it’s okay: the front wheel bearings are worn out and need to be replaced.

Reason and madness for 3000 euros each, part 2
Hyosung GT 650 S and Kawasaki ZL 900

Back in the editorial office, reason and madness have a break from broadcasting. Now the Hyosung GT 650 S and the Kawasaki ZL 900 have to face the critical eyes of workshop master Gerry and prove that they were worth their money.

What did I have to listen to about the Hyosung with Ducati sticker. “A sacrilege”, “it doesn’t work”, “that’s a bad joke”, my colleagues shouted while I was defending Korean engineering. And now this! The chassis reports: the Achilles heel of the Hyosung GT 650 S. A seal on the shock absorber probably slackened on the way home, is the diagnosis of workshop master Gerry. No wonder the box started rocking so penetratively over the last few kilometers. A spare part is needed.

New Pirelli Angel GT tires for Hyosung

The Hyosung GT 650 S is thoroughly checked by workshop master Gerry.

The situation is different with the tires. The selection is large, the offer ranges from sports to touring tires. Suitable for GT 650 But it should be the new Pirelli Angel GT, which also won the touring tire test in MOTORRAD 12/2013. The 120 mm front tire is ready for installation in no time at all. The 160 rubber for the rear wheel, on the other hand, is a long time coming and seems to be much more popular. All online shops and tire dealers in the area have been emptied. The same answer over and over again: delivery time indefinite. It takes more than three weeks for the rear rubber to make its way to the editorial office in the matching 160/60 ZR 17 version. Now it can finally start, the GT 650 S can convince on the road with its qualities – also with the Ducati sticker.

Kawasaki ZL 900 in fair condition

I have problems with rubbers. No, not as you think, but with tires. Workshop foreman Gerry says: “You need new rubbers, look for something new.” Otherwise hardly anything questionable. A test drive and visual inspection of the valve train showed a healthy picture, the engine runs cleanly and smoothly, no noticeable mechanical noises. Spark plugs, front wheel bearing set should be replaced, as well as valve cover gasket. Not a big deal, it costs around 75 euros together. When Gerry asks for an air filter, things get more difficult. When I asked the dealer where I could get one, they only said: “I would like to know that too.” The Internet search leads me to the fan forum www.zl-treffen.de and the information that the Elli motor and air filter with the GPZ 900 shares. Very nice: the problem is solved with 20 euros.

After taking stock, Gerry certifies that the old kawa iron is in good overall condition. So no rotten egg, phew, I’m really happy after this head-over-head purchase. Because some Elli parts such as the master brake cylinder, radiator or carburetor battery are over Kawasaki no longer available, others – such as a new ignition box – expensive (around 450 euros). The most important improvement measure: changing tires. Makeable.

“Dunschlapp” for Elli

The qualifier profile is not up to date, but the white lettering makes a big impression.

But now to the problems. The motorcycle is 27 years old, tires are 18 inches at the front and 15 at the rear. Not uncommon at the time, but nowadays manufacturers hardly offer any profiles for this. The original series tires were often referred to as “Dunschlapp” by Elli drivers. Mmh. Calls to Kawa dealers give little information about sensible alternatives, often only the answer: “US import, too seldom in store.” Well, internet research, first of all with the tire manufacturers. Only the ZL 1000 officially imported to Germany can be found via the model search, but recommendations for the 900? Nothing.

Continuing surfing leads me back to the fan forum and leads to a clutter of entries: Some of them have V-tires in their German papers, while others have the H entry from the US papers, i.e. a lower speed index. In addition, there is sometimes an incorrect maximum speed specification, namely that of the GPZ 900, i.e. 245 km / h instead of 215 km / h. According to the papers, I need V-tires (up to 240 km / h) and both tires must be from the same manufacturer. The Avon Roadrider is currently popular with ZL fans. Metzeler and Bridgestone only offer mixed tires, but they also worked. And the Dunlop series tires, the qualifier, are in a modified version in the range: F20 at the front and K 525 at the rear. So what. A call to AFM Reifenhandel GmbH (phone 0 70 32/93 60 41, www.gibgummi24.de) brings even more light into the dark: The rubbers cost around 250 euros – that sounds okay. I’ll take the Dunlops, workshop manager Gerry gives his blessing. Elli, get warmed up, you’ll soon be out on the street!

Wilbers strut or original part?

When browsing the Internet and especially in the fan forum www.hyosung-treff.de, it quickly becomes clear that I have two alternatives: either the Wilbers shock absorber of the GT 650 RR from the Hyosung GT 650-Cup or the original part from the importer MSA. In figures, this means around 200 euros for standard goods against a proud 550 euros for racing accessories. For bargain hunters the matter is already decided, for people of reason anyway. After all, 200 euros hurts enough on such a young motorcycle, and the Korean woman no longer has to prove herself on the racetrack in this life.

In addition, Gerry donated the GT 650 S new brake pads. That was urgently needed, because when changing, the thin residual coverings were already crumbling from the carrier plates. In an emergency, it could have ended badly. In addition, there is luckily nothing to complain about. The 650 cubic V2 runs smoothly. The valve clearance fits. No disturbing noises, no abnormalities. That’s how I imagined it, after all, the unit is almost new. To be on the safe side, spark plugs, valve cover seals, air and oil filters are exchanged. That makes about 350 euros together. In the price war, these investments set me back a few meters, but all of the parts – even without researching the used market – are easily available in specialist shops.
