6 mid-range naked bikes (2018) in check

Middle class is an extremely flexible term today. It includes a lot of different concepts and price ranges. We are presenting six different naked bike models from Aprilia, BMW, Honda, KTM, MV Agusta, Triumph and Yamaha, which could be worth a closer look.

S.ou think that the 950 cc and 125 hp of a Kawasaki Z 900 make the term middle class a little absurd? One can certainly agree with that. However, if you take the purchase price as the decisive criterion, the 9,000 euro Kawa is clearly a mid-range motorcycle. However you make the classification – it is clear that even below the 100 hp attractive models vie for the buyer’s favor. However, to compete against stronger machines in direct comparison would not only be unfair, it would go beyond any scope. The middle middle is very similarly equipped, located in comparable regions in terms of price – just a little more moderate motorized. In addition to lower maintenance costs, there is a clear advantage: These machines can be throttled to A2-compliant 48 HP. Below we show six recommended mid-range models from Aprilia, BMW, Honda, KTM, MV Agusta, Triumph and Yamaha.

Honda CB 650 F.

The small four-cylinder characterizes the Honda CB 650 F as a barrel organ. The 649 cubic short-stroke engine turns a little cautiously at low revs up to almost 12,000 rpm.

Honda CB 650 F..

The extremely compact motorcycle offers good handling, silky smoothness and a good transmission at an affordable price. Despite the simple equipment without large electronics packages, it is a wonderful fun motorcycle that is often overlooked and underestimated. It was published in 2014 and was last extensively revised in 2017. As one of the last four-cylinders in this displacement class, it celebrates the classic construction of Japanese mid-range bikes.

Data: Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 649 cm³, 67 kW (91 PS) at 11,000 rpm, empty weight 210 kg, tank capacity 17.3 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 215 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3, 9 seconds, consumption 4.3 l / 100 km, price including ancillary costs 8,490 euros

BMW F 800 R.

Since 2009 the BMW F 800 R has offered an alternative to the tried and tested Bavarian boxer and cardan combination. Whereby the parallel twin at least acoustically approaches the flat twin thanks to a 360 degree ignition offset.

Their sharp brakes also seem to be taken from the higher-priced models. In conjunction with the initial tires, it drives very well despite all the pragmatics. Long wheelbase, ergonomics and space are even good for a vacation with a pillion passenger. With the electronic landing gear, main stand and heated grips, however, the 10,000 euro mark can soon be cracked.

Data: Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 798 cm³, 66 kW (90 PS) at 8,000 rpm, empty weight 210 kg, tank capacity 15 liters, seat height 790 mm, top speed 218 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.6 sec , Consumption 4.1 l / 100 km, price including ancillary costs 9,440 euros

Aprilia Shiver 900

The Shiver has done well with the increase in displacement. The 900 V2 offers great entertainment value and ample pressure from low speeds. The Aprilia Shiver 900 also owes the sporty driving feel (especially for this class) to its high-quality chassis components and very good brakes.

Arturo Rivas

Aprilia Shiver 900.

An almost perfect roadster with Italian charm. Only the first tires do not quite want to harmonize with the wide six-inch rear wheel rim, something blocks with a sporty driving style. A new price under 9,000 euros makes the Aprilia Shiver 900, presented in 2017, a value-for-money tip.

Data: Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke 90 ° V-engine, 896 cm³, 70 kW (95 PS) at 8,750 / min, weight 225 kg, tank capacity 15 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 215 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.9 seconds, consumption 4.3 l / 100 km, price including ancillary costs 8,990 euros

Triumph Street Triple S

At a price of 9,500 euros, the basic Streety offers the same great three-cylinder as the R variant. The other vote results in 113 hp at 11,250 revolutions. The R version has 118 hp at 12,000 rpm.

The equipment is a bit simpler, the chassis is not adjustable. ABS, traction control and at least two driving modes are still on board.

Data: Three-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 765 cm³, 83 kW (113 hp) at 11,250 rpm, empty weight 192 kg, tank capacity 17.4 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 241 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.5 sec, consumption 4.4 l / 100 km, price including ancillary costs 9,350 euros

Yamaha MT-09

For 9,175 euros, the standard MT-09 does not offer any golden chassis components, but the crossplane three-cylinder, like the SP variant, has 115 hp.

The quickshifter is also included in the basic version. Anyone who can do without the Ohlins lettering and the exclusive color scheme of the SP is well advised with the normal 09.

Data: Three-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 847 cm³, 84.6 kW (115 PS) at 10,000 rpm, curb weight 195 kg, tank capacity 14.0 liters, seat height 820 mm, top speed 210 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3 , 4 sec, consumption, 4.9 l / 100 km, price including ancillary costs 9,165 euros

MV Agusta Brutale 800

Expensive, noble, highly emotional. And not a motorcycle that cares about utility. 116 HP strong and almost 14,000 euros expensive, formally the Brutale clearly belongs to the upper middle class, but should be mentioned here for the sake of completeness.

MV Agusta Brutale 800.

Although the Euro 4 revision scheduled for 2016 has tamed the brutals somewhat, this has not changed their archaic and demanding character. Its valuable details, the technically sophisticated three-cylinder and the beautiful tubular space frame ennoble it to a sculpture on two wheels. Not a sensible Monday morning bike, but an adventure motorcycle for an enjoyable Sunday excursion.

Data: Water-cooled three-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 798 cm³, 85.3 kW (116 hp) at 11500 rpm, empty weight 199 kg, tank capacity 16.6 liters, seat height 835 mm, top speed 237 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.6 seconds, consumption 4.9 l / 100 km, price including ancillary costs 14 176 euros

On the subject of “How much middle-class naked do people need?”

If you have plus / minus 9,000 euros on the high edge and are willing to buy an undisguised motorcycle, unimagined possibilities open up. First of all, the machines over 100 hp tested in the comparison: They are so close together that the choice between them is a very pleasant one, but not an easy one.

Then maybe the nakeds with 95 hp are also an option. In terms of price, they are also at the above sum, and if you look at the equipment, there are no worlds separating them. For example, the running gear and brakes of the Aprilia Shiver 900 are in no way inferior to those of the 100 HP plus machines. The same applies to the BMW F 800 R, with which you can go on vacation for two without any major dislocations. Or Honda’s CB 650 F: an outrageously fun package for active pilots, which would also save around 1000 euros. Sure, in terms of engine power, a whole league under a Z 900, but it also reaches the limits of the StVO faster than you can say a driving ban. Everyone can and must decide for themselves how much power is enough. The better equipped variants R, SP and Co. open up even more possibilities. Logically: Streety R and MT-09 SP beat their basic sisters in terms of handling and, with the former, in terms of brakes and electronics. But is that worth the 1200 Euro surcharge? There is no general answer to that either, it always depends on you. To make a long story short: There are no tired cucumbers under any of these machines, they differ primarily in character today. More important for the purchase decision than the blunt performance information is therefore: The overall package must suit you. Enjoy the agony of choice!
