The new brake disc lock from Abus unlocks via a Bluetooth signal from the smartphone. Combined with a 100 dB loud alarm, it should ensure safety and comfort. It will hit the German market in autumn 2019.

The smartphone communicates with the brake disc lock via a Bluetooth connection. A Bluetooth-enabled cell phone is of course required for this. What is not required: Any input on the mobile phone; The smartphone stays in the jacket, pants, chest or ‘wherever’ pocket. “As soon as the user approaches his motorcycle with a smartphone and presses the lock against the brake disc with a light touch, the smartphone is authorized via the secure Bluetooth connection and the lock is automatically unlocked”, according to the manufacturer’s theory.

The Bluetooth interface on the lock is not a world first – whether frame locks, chain locks or padlocks, many models in the bicycle sector are already equipped with this smartphone-compatible function. However, we have not yet come across a motorcycle brake disc lock with a Bluetooth interface.

If the owner activates the Bluetooth motorcycle lock, the 13.5 mm thick locking bolt pulls out with a slight pressure on the bolt. As soon as the lock is mounted on the brake disc and the locking bolt is pressed against the brake disc, the lock locks automatically. The electronic position sensor “3D Position Detection” is automatically activated when it is locked. Every shock or change in position of the motorcycle now triggers a 100 dB alarm.

It is charged via USB-C

What happens if a driver forgets to release the lock before the tour? “The alarm warns them of a total write-off in good time,” says the manufacturer. LED lights inform about the battery and activation mode. In the transport position – in the tank bag, for example – the lock is in sleep mode and does not trigger an alarm.

The Detecto 8078 SmartX is charged via USB-C. And what if the battery on the lock is empty? The owner is informed several times via the app before the battery is empty. If the battery should be completely empty, it has to be charged with a power bank. “With normal use, the battery will last about 6 to 8 weeks”, according to the manufacturer.

Market launch, price and colors

How do you unlock the lock if the owner has lost their smartphone, the battery is empty, etc.? Don’t worry: with the lock, he receives a master code with which he can authorize the pairing with several smartphones.

The Detecto 8078 SmartX is not due to hit the market until autumn 2019. It will cost 249.95 euros and will be available in blue, yellow and silver-gray.
