Basic version: The differences are limited: Instead of spring elements and steering dampers from Ohlins, the RR comes with Sachs components. The stern offers a passenger more space. The tires are Pirelli Diablo Rosso III instead of Supercorsa SP, at the rear in 190/55 instead of 200/55 at the factory

To the point of bending

Endless curves, fold down to the stop: none of the Power-Nakeds drives as eagerly as the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory. Now comes an update including Euro 4 voting. Can the ecstasy be increased??

Why can he do it? “, A visibly bad-tempered VW boss Winterkorn upsets his unfortunate employees when he inspects a Hyundai at the 2011 IAA. Too bad that he was filmed and that this scene was clicked millions of times as a video across the globe. One could imagine a similar scenario in the motorcycle sector. At least that’s what went through the author’s head when he drove the new Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory from Trento over roads winding up into the mountains towards the Dolomites. As the A.prilia sweeps through seemingly endless combinations of curves, the unbelievable lines on which it sticks through the crazy turns to the Lago di Stramentizzo, the crystal-clear feedback the Ohlins suspension gives on bumpy ground, that is a very special experience, a feast for the senses and sensuality for Friends of committed locomotion. And this incomparable V4 sound backdrop as accompanying music.

To the point of bending

How does Aprilia do it?

Why doesn’t anyone manage it like Aprilia, you ask yourself involuntarily. How does this little group from Noale manage that, whose RSV4 already ironed the current superbikes in MOTORRAD 9 on the racetrack? What can the Italians do better than the inflated development departments of the industry leaders? Questions that can hardly be answered from a distance, in any case the tingling result of fine engineering speaks for itself. Exceptional – her fans would rather call it extraterrestrial – the Tuono has been so far. Is it even possible to increase it? The new Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory shows: Sure, a little something is always possible, because the 1100 was not perfect even in the last evolutionary stage. In addition, technical developments are progressing continuously, keyword electronics. In addition, it should not be kept secret, there were still a few real weak points that offered scope for improvement.

The new Tuono doesn’t compromise

Let’s start with the latter: There was above all the not at all fine brake with its cheap-looking conventional hand pump. The new Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory makes no compromises: A Brembo PR 16 radial pump now functions as the master cylinder, and huge, five millimeter thick 330 disks replace the previously 4.5 millimeter thick 320. Pliers: Brembo M50 with BRM 10B sintered pads – everything at its finest. It’s logical that the Tuono can now be placed on the front wheel with two fingers – if the lift detection in track mode is given the appropriate freedom. The V4 engine needed an update because of Euro 4. Aprilia took the opportunity to teach him finer manners. It got new control times, optimized mapping and a maximum speed increased by 500 to 12,500 rpm. The top performance remained unchanged with angry 175 hp, so there was certainly no need for action. The exhaust corresponds to that of the RSV4, works with a flap that switches from a detour through the voluminous damper to free passage at 5,000 rpm. There were also minor changes to the hardware, such as DLC-coated piston pins to minimize internal friction. The combustion chambers are now mechanically processed instead of simply cast.

Euro 4 costs some weight

As is often observed at the moment, Euro 4 also costs a little weight in the case of the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory, keyword exhaust and activated carbon filter for tank ventilation. An increase of 2.5 kilograms is certainly bearable. Especially since Aprilia counteracted, saving 800 grams on the Ohlins fork and 590 grams on the throttle alone. The decisive thing – and that is the progress that is currently in vogue – happened in the electronic field. Logically, a TFT display that is hip today with a veritable flood of information was set. What is interesting is what is behind it. Namely, almost unbelievable possibilities of retrievable information and derived setting options. The basis is the Bosch IMU, which is almost mandatory today. The lean angle and inertia sensors, which control cornering ABS, traction and wheelie control. The five-channel sensor box is now installed at an angle of 45 degrees in order to be able to calculate the missing pitch rate. Incidentally, BMW and Ducati have been using this trick for a long time. The current settings are clearly presented on the display, and they can be changed at lightning speed on the left side of the handlebars while driving. The inclination display has a high entertainment value – if you manage to look into the cockpit at a 50 degree incline.

Racetrack? No problem!

The quickshifter is new, which works in both shift directions and even allows you to step down gears under full load. For example when overtaking when you need a little more thrust quickly. Simply press the lever at full throttle and the lower gear slips in seamlessly. Wonderful, who needs a clutch now? If you want to live out your play instinct, you can lurch through the village with the pit lane limiter. Or use the cruise control of the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory. Okay, it is conceivable that somebody needs such frippery at some point – but not here and now. If you order the optional MP adapter (Multimedia Platform) (190 euros), you will find additional display and play options, including complete data recording, on a smartphone synchronized with the on-board electronics. Incredible, but true: On race tracks you can choose a special setting for every single curve, GP slopes are already programmed.

Euro 4 version goes on the gas very filigree

Purists will probably object. Assistance instead of essence, that would be a horror scenario for many. But don’t worry, the Tuono has both in abundance. Nevertheless: The electronic helpers make more sense with the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory than with any other machine. This is also due to the V4 engine, which instantly and almost imperceptibly generates an abnormal thrust in every speed range. In the basic setting of the test machines (traction control level five, wheelie control level two), the digital helpers had their hands full. Although this brings security, the permanent interventions also noticeably inhibit propulsion. So quickly, traction control on level two, wheelie control off. And already there is huge progress, the front wheel loses contact with the ground at almost every corner exit. The fact that there is always so much smoke is due not only to brute power but also to the fact that you drive higher speeds than the greedy, rattling sound leads to believe. The V4 with its irregular firing order just feels very different from a screaming four-cylinder screamer. In the past, throttle acceptance was a permanent construction site of the Tuono, and great progress can be reported here. The Euro 4 version is very delicate on the gas, even wheelies are – believe it or not – as cleanly controllable as with a Super Duke. Gone are the days when the Aprilia jumped jerkily on the gas.

The price: just under 18,500 euros

Handling and suspension were already state of the art. Nevertheless, the Tuono now looks even more finely balanced, even more balanced. The Ohlins suspension just works incredibly well; in a sporty driving style, it appears taut and progressive, but on the other hand rolls over rough terrain with unexpected comfort. And always offers crystal-clear feedback. That is very high art. In the current generation, the Tuono has reached an enormous degree of maturity. You could certainly complain about the pillion seat or windbreaker, the simple, non-adjustable clutch lever or the consumption: But when it comes to driving fun on the country road, about sound and feeling, the Aprilia is outstanding. And from an objective point of view, it is clearly better than before. A greedy machine that creates desire. The last hurdle is still the price: Almost 18,500 euros are due for the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory, a lot of wood. But if you give up here, you will miss this incomparable pleasure when you bend down.
