Pay a maximum of 15 euros for bed and breakfast, and that during the high season in a top holiday region? In the boom times of Aldi, Lidl, Penny & Co. are bargain tours all the rage? and offer maximum experience.

Achern, Schwarzwald-Hochstrabe, Mummelsee car park. I park my Honda NX 650 next to a special item “Original Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks ?? in front of Dieterle ?? s Black Forest shop, study the room certificate on the information board of the tourist information: ?? Berghotel Mummelsee ?? directly on the lake, with wood-fired bakery, show bread baking and Black Forest cherry cake demonstration, overnight stay in a cozy, comfort. Double room from 38.50 euros p.p. P. ?? and go over my plan again. Tour through the Black Forest for six days without bulky luggage such as a tent, sleeping bag, camping stove and be stingy without mercy. I’m not stupid and pay more than 15 euros a night for the roof over my head including breakfast.

Price hammers, top offers ?? cheap is in. The pedal boat rental at Mummelsee, ?? 30 minutes 3.90 euros ??, has recognized the signs of the times and tried to lure passers-by on the Schwarzwald-Hochstrabe with a super bargain: ?? Free of charge every day from 6pm Go by pedal-boat??. But I have to keep going, curves and bargain quarters hunt between Oppenau and Freudenstadt. Three hours to go before dusk.

Not like that: in the middle of the market square there are only luxury hostels.

In a flying ride over the Schwarzwald-Hochstrabe and Schwarzwald-Baderstrabe, through the Murg and Lierbachtal valleys. The spoils of curves are growing ad infinitum, but there are no cheap accommodations in sight. So on, via Bad Rippoldsau-Schapbach through Wolfachtal and via Hausach to Hornberg. 7.30 p.m., the tourist information office is already closed, but a passer-by has advice: ?? Heu-Hotel Hildbrand. At the end of the village right, past the Ketterer brewery into the Frombacher valley. ?? A short time later, the single-cylinder roars over a little road that is not even remotely recorded on my map on a scale of 1 to 200,000. The needles of the spruce trees move closer to the edge of the road, a buzzard sails over the steep slopes of the Black Forest, a stream gurgles nearby. No cuckoo clocks, no tourists ?? no quarters for the night either?

Bargain Tour Black Forest (Info)

If you are stingy with the money for the overnight stay, you will make lots of nice acquaintances and learn more about the country and its people than in the best five-star hotel.

Stay cheap
There are plenty of accommodations in the Black Forest, but quarters that can be accessed for a maximum of 15 euros per night are rare. The regional and local tourist information offices (see below for addresses) are happy to help with the search in advance and on site. If a more or less simple “roof over your head” with a rich breakfast is enough, private landlords and farms usually come off best in the price comparison. With a minimum stay of three days, youth hostels also offer an inexpensive alternative for members under the age of 26 (www.djh-bad-wuertt.de). Attention: The visitor’s tax is often swept under the table when asking for a price, so ask extra! If you want to move into a new quarter every night, you have to reckon with surcharges of between one and seven euros, so also inquire. The following recommended Black Forest quarters charge between ten and 15 euros per person for a single overnight stay with breakfast (single room, multi-bed room, double room or “hay box”):

You have to be able to spend the night somewhere cheap here …

8 p.m. A paddock with a riding stable appears on the left; on the right is a dung heap, behind it the Hildbrand ??sche Hof with the hay hotel. There is no reception. If you want to find the owners, you can stop by the trout smokehouse, the schnapps distillery, the shed with the tractors or the horse, rabbit or cowshed. ?? There used to be a barn for 70 pigs here ??, Johannes Hildbrand explains to me, but two years ago he converted it, including the grain silo, into a hay hotel. He leads me to four hay rooms separated by chipboard panels ?? ?? Beg for about 16 people ?? ?? each with a wall lamp and coat hook as well as a tiny window with classic red and white checkered curtains through which the holiday guest can look out onto the steep Black Forest slopes. On the ground floor: kitchen, dining room, sanitary facilities and ?? with a separate entrance ?? the horse stable. The two Haflinger horses and another brown one have somewhat larger boxes than the tourists, but no red and white checked curtains.

Unusual, but quaint and cheap.

I push the Honda into the shed next to the rabbit hutch, approve
me a homemade hay liqueur before I put it in the haylayer of my two-by-two-meter box ?? twelve euros including breakfast? Dig an ergonomically shaped hollow for the night. In the larger room opposite, mother, father, four children and eight stuffed animals move into quarters; the sound of satisfied snoring can be heard; the haysticks tickle the nose, poke through the nightgown despite the luggage roll and motorcycle clothes underneath; it rustles in the corners, creaks and cracks in the roof beams. Around two o’clock the sneezing and blowing the nose in the neighboring cell heralds the onset of hay fever, the horses one floor below scratch restlessly with their hooves, and I long for another hay liqueur.

7.15 a.m., the sun penetrates through the red and white curtains, a pine jay screeches from the surrounding woods, a milk tanker rumbles out of the courtyard entrance. The Hildbrands are done milking ?? Time for breakfast.
