Biking in the Corona crisis – a comment
My motorcycles stop
The corona crisis, with all its requirements, meets fine weather and the start of the motorcycle season. For motorcyclists, the following questions arise: Can I drive? Should i drive? Or do I stay at home? MOTORRAD editor Uli Baumann has a clear opinion on this.

The signal from Chancellor Angela Merkel to all citizens is clear: “Stay at home if you can. The top priority is to contain the corona pandemic.” Actually a clear announcement that relies on solidarity and insight, but with small back doors for those who want to look for and use them.
Point 4 of the rules issued by the federal government states:
“You can do these paths:
– You can leave the apartment if necessary.
– You can leave the apartment if you
- have to go to work,
- to go shopping,
- need to see a doctor,
- attend very important dates,
for example in exams, - Exercise in the fresh air
or go for a walk.”
The federal government also expresses itself on the subject of travel: Is it still possible to travel within Germany? The federal government advises against all travel, including within Germany. In all Federal states apply contact bans or exit restrictions. Overnight stays are only intended in necessary cases and “expressly not for tourist purposes” give.

To what extent do these guidelines allow or limit the urge of motorcyclists to indulge in their hobby? Where the exit is restricted and thus motorcycle tours are taboo, the federal states regulate themselves in their ordinances. It is also clear that the contagion potential on a motorcycle tour is actually zero. As long as you keep the distance rules – even at meeting points.
But I think: It is simply the order of the day not to violate the spirit of the state rules. Various association and interest group representatives whom I have asked about this topic share my opinion. Not to use the free streets for their own edification, while people are fighting for survival in clinics and others are facing the virus first hand to save us from it. And let’s be honest: motorcycling is dangerous, no matter how carefully and carefully we practice our hobby. Small or large slip-ups can quickly occur. And of course we then expect fast and comprehensive medical help. Help that unnecessarily ties up forces that are lacking elsewhere. Yes, we all drive well and safely and yes, nothing ever happens to us. Until it happens. It is also not very solidarity to drive on this side of a country border, while on the other side the bikers are practically house arrest.
I do not drive
My smock also burns when I look out the window, feel and smell nature and the already slightly warm wind caresses my skin. I’ve been riding a motorcycle for over 30 years, out of passion. I drive a lot and drive a lot – actually whenever I can. I treated myself to a new bike for the new season. Man and machine have been optimally prepared for a long time.

And now this: empty streets, sunshine and in the garage the ready-to-drive motorcycles are standing and scratching with the tread blocks. The heart says yes, the brain says no. Riding a motorcycle now feels wrong. With a heavy heart, I leave my machines at a standstill until the point at which it is necessary to drive again. The point in time when I can eat kilometers again with a clear conscience. And until then there are other things that I can do for my leisure time. Oh yes, I live in Baden-Wurttemberg and according to the rules I am allowed to drive.
