Birdcage BMW

New retro boxer in a custom dress

BMW is building its own boxer engine for its new cruiser. For promotional purposes, this can already be shown in custom bikes. It is currently being built into the Revival Birdcage BMW. The custom model will celebrate its premiere soon in Texas.

I.In December 2018, the Japanese customizer Custom Works ZON presented a custom bike in Japan that was designed around a prototype engine of the new BMW boxer engine for the upcoming cruiser model. Now the probably 1.8 liter two-cylinder can adorn itself with a new environment.

At the Handbuilt Customshow 2019, which runs from April 12th to 14th in Austin / Texas, the Texan Customizer Revival will present the Birdcage BMW with that new boxer. Alan Stulberg’s team was inspired by Ernst Henne’s record-breaking machines from the late 1920s and 1930s. The development of the vehicle concept took almost six months.

Filigree frame, mighty boxer

You can see the mighty two-cylinder with air / oil cooling, which hangs in an ultra-filigree tubular space frame made of 9 millimeter thick titanium tubes and connects the steering head with the rear wheel axle in a straight line. There is no rear suspension. The filigree structure gives it its name, with its network it looks like a birdcage. The front wheel, which, like the rear wheel, relies on a few strong wire spokes, is guided by a Telelever construction with a central spring strut, which is supported at the bottom by carbon side members on the main frame and engine block. In its final form, the rear wheel has disc covers. The driver’s seat also seems to consist only of a slightly raised tubular frame with a thin layer. The tank is hidden under a cover directly behind the gearbox.

The two inlet areas of the boxer rely on long intake pipes and open funnels. The titanium exhaust system also looks very open and runs parallel to the ground below the cylinders and just before the rear wheel hub. The cardan runs open, the only brake is a single disc on the rear wheel.

BMW itself wants to present its own concept bike around the new boxer engine in the first half of 2019. And as early as 2020, BMW will present a series vehicle with the big boxer for the cruiser segment, announce the Bavarians.
