Aerowunder K1 goes Kustom

With the K1, BMW brought a lot of new things in 1988. 16V technology, extremely low air resistance, 240 km / h from 100 PS, no suitcases and no lean angle. As a custom bike, the K1 is therefore extremely rare.

1990. Michael Schroder about the motorcycle internship BMW K1 in a sporty ride: “In direct comparison with the two Japanese women, the chassis could not cope with any serious sporting use. And then there is also the matter of the lean angle. Motorcyclist’s greatest asset – and BMW had not installed enough of it.” Only to admit shortly afterwards: “Shortly before the French border, I was already formulating the sales advertisement for my boxer, which at the moment seemed like a drunken donkey to me in terms of driving characteristics.” Whichever view is correct: The K1 was always rare. A renovation comes very close to a cultural asset desecration.

Another K

That is not completly correct. Another K was not the K1, but the one Evolution of the K100. New engine with four-valve technology, 100 PS, 240 km / h fast, streamlined styling, regulated catalytic converter. With reinforced frame, four-piston saddles, ABS and lots of electronics. The color scheme of the K1 presented in 1988 was to say the least: blatant. Marak meal meets bright yellow. There was nothing like that before.

Time for a renovation

The K100 models weren’t typical BMWs and the K1 never wanted to be. Suitcases weren’t even available for money and with the amount of plastic other manufacturers were able to build three motorcycles at once. Exotic status was included in the price. That was 33 years ago, Lord Drake Kustom takes the exotic and mercilessly remodels. It was supposed to be an extreme cafe racer.

Rear of MV

The flex separates the rear frame from the rest of the tubes. The new frame is attached to the trim piece MV Agusta F3 customized. Just below this, a short muffler made in-house provides goose bumps sound from the mechanically unchanged, recumbent quad with its 100 hp. The large airbox is no longer needed and is replaced by four individual air filters. Let’s hope there was also a lot of work on mapping and air flow meters, as K BMWs reimburse interventions in the intake tract with refusal to work.

Supersport suspension

Back then, BMW wanted the K1 to be positioned as a super athlete, which is fine at 240 km / h top speed, but with only 100 hp and 260 kg live weight, it tends towards sports tourers. For comparison: the GSX-R 1100 from 1988 weighed 15 kilos less and had 38 hp more. Lord Drake not only saves weight by omitting the fairing, but also brings the undercarriage up to date by means of a USD fork and appropriate radial saddles. A contemporary spring strut from White Power, which is a little flatter on the shorter rear frame, springs and dampens the cardan swing arm . The Lord screws an adapted spoked wheel into the new fork, while at the rear he can adapt the hub of an R1200 GS to the standard drive. An advantage that only the 4V-Ks have, as a new cardan was installed here. The whole thing is then crowned with a paint design in the BMW motorsport colors. The curves on the tank create a nice connection to the tight rear section.

Many are beautiful, but also impassable.

Better to leave it in its original condition.

Conclusion

K1 with MV rear. A lot of exotic things come together and Lord Drake Kustoms creates a nice mix out of it. Despite all the changes, the K a K remains, the cafe is always written bigger than the racer.
