The currently strongest BMW boxer

Smart, the stylish two-tone paintwork makes the new BMW R 1200 R look downright sexy. What can the roadster do in terms of driving compared to its air-cooled predecessor??

It’s a morning like a Van Gogh painting. Sheep clouds graze on an insane blue sky, spinning lazily in the firmament. Like a roller coaster, the road winds around initially cream-colored, then rust-red ledges. There are pine trees on it as large green umbrellas. Warm light caresses your motorcycle. And how! For two years now, a different era has dawned at BMW under the new head of design, Edgar Heinrich. For the completely redesigned Roadster BMW R. 1200 R his team pulled out all the stops, right down to the Ducati-like red lacquered tubular space frame of this white lacquer variant “Style 1”. More beautiful, more dynamic than the old R 1200 R even when it was stationary. More than 50,000 units have been built since 2007.

BMW R 1200 R in the top test
The currently strongest BMW boxer

BMW R 1200 R needs 4.6 liters per 100 kilometers

The water boxer hangs silky on the gas, reacts sensitively via ride-by-wire to the slightest opening of the short-stroke throttle. Wow, that pushes out of the corners and hairpin bends even in the lower rev range. Excitingly lively and spirited tear up to 125 PS and 124 Newton meters. At every speed, the water boxer clearly outperforms its predecessor, which is not exactly weak-chested. It is also easier to turn and does not lock until around 1000 revolutions later. But it doesn’t matter on the country road. What is important, however, is that thanks to the modified airbox and new silencers, the new BMW R 1200 R is the most powerful BMW boxer well into medium speeds, ahead of the GS and RT.

This ample torque curve makes for a strong sprint and character. Amazing: Both generations of boxers have identical stroke and bore values, i.e. the same displacements of 1170 cubic centimeters. Such a power regimen deserves special respect without any disadvantages. As before, two lambda sensors ensure cylinder-selective control. The new crankshaft rotates at 3800 rpm for 100 km / h, whereas the old engine only rotates 3600 rpm. Nevertheless, the water boxer in the BMW R 1200 R needs less petrol. If you respect all speed limits on the country road, 4.6 instead of 4.9 liters is enough for 100 kilometers. Better thermal conditions allow a leaner mixture. And less curved suction paths improve the flow.

More centrifugal mass serves as an anti-stall program

Two driving modes, “Road” and “Rain”, are standard on the new BMW R 1200 R. In rain mode, the throttle response is gentler, ABS and the basic traction control ASC (both standard) regulate earlier, more defensive. Two additional driving modes cost extra: “Dynamic” is more aggressive than “Road” mode. In the dispensable “user” mode, you can individually program e-gas acceptance and slip control. The higher-quality DTC traction control with lean angle detection is also optional. It gets a lot to do on the test track, and in the “Road” mode it always straddles to regulate. This can be recognized by the yellow warning light in the cockpit, which often flashes. It does this less often in “Dynamic” mode, because it allows more slip, i.e. a rear wheel that occasionally wedges minimally.

The hydraulic oil bath clutch can be pulled easily, but is not ideally adjustable. It works a little digitally: on / off. Nevertheless, if you start off half-heartedly, only the old, air-cooled engine stops suddenly. Compared to the first water-cooled GS, all new boxer models now have a good kilogram more flywheel mass. As an anti-stall program. And pounds to proliferate for better running culture. Only in the second half of the speed does it vibrate and tingle noticeably in the rubber grips, plastic covers over the tank and rubber footrests.

Speed adjustment through automatic double-declutching

The automatic gearshift Pro is optionally available for the new BMW R 1200 R. This means you can shift up and down without using the clutch. But unlike the previously tested RT and GS, it is really good fun here and works perfectly. Step through the aisles quickly and easily. When downshifting, the electronics automatically double-declutch to adjust the engine speed. The coordination seems perfect, you can shift gear without jerking even in a high lean angle, great! In aisles four to six you rarely use the clutch. When actuated conventionally, the switching shocks are more noticeable.

Left hook, right hook, then the straight line. It’s sensational how easily the new BMW R 1200 R circles corners. Light-footed and playful. Course corrections are child’s play, even on a steep incline, without any effort. Closer, further? No problem, at will. This sporty light-footedness inspires, creates trust and conveys security. Fine. The completely new chassis stands out from the older one. The new BMW R 1200 R circles even more precisely, drives exactly to the millimeter, finds the right line telepathically. Direction of view is the same as the direction of travel. At some point your thoughts go for a walk in the middle of the curve frenzy. Not because driving is so boring, but because everything is so easy.

242 kilos including main stand and case carrier

The new BMW R 1200 R makes you inconspicuously fast. Especially since the feedback is better than with Telelever. You feel the road. A good choice to hold onto a 180 rear tire. The Metzeler Z8 Interact Roadtec rubbers (front M, rear C) roll nicely round and homogeneously to the edge of the tire. They stick great, very predictable. At some point the moderately high mounted footrests drag. The main stand comes shortly afterwards. So better curb it. Including the main stand and luggage rack, this adds up to 242 kilos, eight more than before.

Nevertheless, the new BMW R 1200 R feels much lighter to drive. The basic chassis data have shifted towards good stability and straight-line stability compared to the old ones on paper: caster and wheelbase (at least 1515 millimeters) slightly longer, steering head a little flatter. In direct comparison, the old R appears bulkier, stiffer and less handy, although it is lighter. The previous R 1200 R also has a more sluggish effect when maneuvering – due to the stiff steering damper. He remembers himself when driving off cold in the morning.

BMW R 1200 R with semi-active Dynamic ESA chassis

One of the many extras of the new BMW R 1200 R is its semi-active Dynamic ESA chassis. It automatically adjusts the damping depending on the road surface and driving conditions (acceleration / deceleration). With a softer basic set-up in the “Road” mode and tighter, sporty damping in the “Dynamic” level. Within milliseconds, the front and rear damper valves are constantly opened or closed while driving. Maybe too fast sometimes. Because short bumps and hard edges, the single-sided swing arm reaches surprisingly unfiltered to the buttocks at speeds above 60 to 70 km / h. The hindquarters harden on such disturbing impulses served dry.

On the other hand, it almost levels bumps, lies really full. In pillion operation, the strut of the new BMW R 1200 R fishes out more hardship than that of the old ones. And the new upside-down fork is nice and comfortable. Sporty and yet suitable for touring. The 2015 roadster is easy to turn even on the brakes and hardly stands up. And that in spite of brute braking performance – not only in emergency situations. When the radially struck Brembo monoblocks bite on the 320 discs, it presses the liquor against the top of your skull with force. The upside-down fork dips far, goes fully on the block, and the semi-active suspension does not change anything. Only the previous Telelever offers a brake buckling compensation, which remains on the front brake and can thus better absorb bumps.

When braking hard, the 2015 model’s rear wheel becomes light, usually staying just above the ground. Only cross winds or bumps can sometimes wedge it out minimally. The old R can be slowed down even more stable and stoic. However, with significantly longer braking distances: the conventional four-piston fixed calipers bite less, and the older ABS controls more coarsely. Especially since the old BMW R 1200 R requires quite a lot of manual force for strong deceleration. Not good for the dosage.

Bench still not height adjustable

As usual, good here and there: the ergonomics. The magic triangle seat – handlebar – footrest is known from its predecessor. The handlebars are at hand as if by themselves, the old one was a tad wider. The posture is emphatically upright, very pleasant. Positive: In the 2015 model, the tank is a little narrower and spreads the legs less. However, the new bench is still not height-adjustable. But with a seat height of 770 millimeters, it’s pretty low. BMW offers four different bench seats, a full eight centimeters between the lowest and the highest. The latter should offer a more active driving position closer to the handlebars. And thanks to the narrow cut, it is not only suitable for tall drivers. Because the water boxer is ventilated from above, he leaves more space for the feet and lower legs. Good at driving and maneuvering. The old BMW R 1200 R, however, is more comfortable and better for the front passenger: the rear seat is larger, more thickly padded and the knee angle is even more relaxed.

Nevertheless, victory in the exchange of blows between the two boxers clearly goes to the new BMW R 1200 R. It offers more in many disciplines: feedback and maneuverability, stability and agility, power and braking, equipment and design. The better is the good enemy. The new BMW R 1200 R delivers just as much enjoyment and all-round qualities as the old, but significantly more dynamism and sport.

Lots of tasty: From almost 2500 to over 8000 tours, the new BMW R 1200 R always has over 100 Newton meters, from 5000 to 7000 even over 120. At any speed, the more economical water boxer is significantly more powerful than its air-cooled predecessor: by up to 20 Newton meters. In addition, the old boxer gives his performance much more wavy. All of this, although both boxers are identical in bore and stroke, including the displacement of 1170 cm³. Progress without disadvantages.
