For the good of the motorcycle, because although the new R has gained weight compared to the somewhat staid and chubby-looking old 1200 roadster, the “LC” offers more feedback and a stiffer chassis.

So the chassis is better than before, the engine is stronger, the braking distances are shorter, the appearance is fresher – no wonder that traditionalists can hardly stay cool with good used offers and check their financial liquidity.

The new R 1200 R not only looks sportier than its predecessor, it is too. The chassis even makes a slightly larger contribution to this than the dynamic boxer engine, which has hardly lost any of its liveliness even with a heavier flywheel.

Tips for buying used

With the water boxer roadster built in 2015 or later, BMW has succeeded in giving the model series a new image: the watchword is dynamic instead of conservative. As a young used car, the BMW R 1200 R is in great demand.

The addition “LC” There is actually no such thing as a model name, but you need this auxiliary crutch to clearly differentiate. Because the abbreviation R 1200 R comes twice, once with the good old oil / air-cooled boxer, once as “LC” – what kind of “Liquid Cooled” stands. Both cylinders are still well exposed in the airstream, but a water cooler should ensure that thermal loads do not damage the engine. The bottom line is that practically no stone has been left unturned with the BMW R 1200 R from model year 2015. First of all, of course, the eye falls on the new, striking water boxer, which is now galloping off with a powerful 125 hp – just like two model years earlier with the bestseller R 1200 GS.

From 2015 with a new image

On top of that, there are a number of technical streamlining and rejuvenation measures. To list these would go beyond the scope, therefore the whole thing in note form below “Facelift”. The important thing is: Bayern wanted to give their naked street motorcycle a new image. More dynamic, cooler, lighter – and yes – also sportier. With success, although the undertaking was tricky.

Because R-drivers are traditionally not really athletic types, prefer to tour comfortably instead of racing, rather stop at the inn than do a wheelie in front of it. The not-so-well-behaved BMW can be fast and fierce – if you want to. An eye-catching upside-down fork with 140 millimeters of suspension travel breaks through the viewing and driving habits of orthodox BMW supporters after the 20-year Telelever era. For the good of the motorcycle, because although the new BMW R 1200 R has gained weight compared to the somewhat staid and chubby-looking old 1200 roadster, the “LC” more feedback and a stiffer chassis. So the chassis is better than before, the engine is stronger, the braking distances are shorter, the appearance is fresher – no wonder that traditionalists can hardly stay cool with good used offers and check their financial liquidity.

Facelift

2015:  Launch in February. The BMW R 1200 R, which has been available since 2007, has a new, now water-cooled engine (“Water boxer”) with 125 instead of 110 hp, which is the unofficial additional designation “LC” leads. Basically completely new motorcycle: the engine is still a load-bearing element, but now a torsion-resistant tubular steel bridge frame instead of the front and rear subframes, front wheel guidance via upside-down telescopic fork instead of Telelever, new exhaust system in pentagonal design on the right-hand side, cardan shaft Single-sided swing arm on the left, two additional driving modes, lighter ten-spoke cast wheels, new shift assistant for shifting without a clutch as an ex-works option, new instrument cluster, keyless ride. Colors: blue, metallic gray, white-red. Price: from 12,800 euros. Approvals in D: 856 pieces

2016: Colors unchanged. Price: from 12,950 euros. Approvals in D: 1,622 pieces

2017: Adjustments to the Euro 4 standard. Shock absorbers on the transmission output shaft, modified shift drum actuation, transmission shafts and their bearings. Colors: metallic gray, red, white-red. Price: from 13,100 euros. Approvals in D: 1,256 units (as of November 2017).

Dealer interview with Maikel Piel

Maikel Piel, 37, has been selling cars for 14 years- & Motorradhaus Borchardt in Stemwede BMW motorcycles.

MOTORCYCLE: Compared to the Bieder-Boxer from before, the BMW R 1200 R LC seems really cool and sporty. Your customers see it the same way?

Maikel Piel: Yes, yes. The Wasserboxer-R looks significantly more dynamic, slimmer and is perceived as a more light-footed motorcycle. There are still some for whom it is almost too perfect and who lack the typical boxer feeling, but as a rule such interested parties recognize during the test drive at the latest that the advantages of the many technical changes simply outweigh the advantages. If it is too much modern technology for you, you can ask for one of the last air-cooled BMW R 1200 R, also available as a classic special model, or even switch to the more puristic, but also very dynamic and slim R nineT.

MOTORCYCLE: Which technical changes compared to the predecessor offer the most topics of conversation?

Maikel Piel: In addition to the main topic of the engine, this is certainly the switch from Telelever to upside-down fork. The Telelever is missed by some as a characteristic BMW technology and specialty. But the fork looks modern and appealing, and after a short ride, almost all Telelever fans are convinced of the fork’s overall better drivability and think it is good.

MOTORCYCLE: Which machines are interested parties switching from??

Maikel Piel: For example, last year I traded in two Ducati Monsters. However, it is mostly somewhat older BMW drivers who switch from their heavier, more unwieldy RTs and LTs and hope that the roadster will provide them with a more secure stance and generally better vehicle control. And then there are also loyal R 1150 R owners who treat themselves to a new R after many years and often over 80,000 kilometers.

MOTORCYCLE: Equipment and accessories – what’s going well?

Maikel Piel: When buying a new car, most of them decided, with the foresight of resale, for a wide range of equipment such as Dynamic ESA suspension, cruise control or RDC. Interested parties ask about it, and because we also mainly offer second-hand full dressers in the store, nobody misses anything. Case and original navigation system are almost standard, a high accessory windshield is in turn required depending on the driver’s size. For some, the standard seat at 770 millimeters is too low, so I recommend the 820 seat, which is a good fit for almost every driver.

BMW R nineT

The retro BMW launched in 2014 drives air-cooled, less technocratic and very entertaining through the country. 110 hp, weight 222 kg, 0-100 km / h in 3.3 seconds, Vmax 217 km / h, consumption 5.2 liters, ABS, from 9,500 euros *
