New travel and sports boxer

Enduro R 1200 GS, Roadster R 1200 R, Adventure Bike R 1200 GS Adventure and Travel Tourer R 1200 RT – BMW has developed a wide range of models for the water boxer. What was still missing was the touring version, the one for travel and sports. Until now. Curtain up for the new BMW R 1200 RS.

D.he aspects of travel and sport have a long tradition at BMW. In 1976, the BMW R 100 RS, the first offshoot of this type, took the stage. It combined sporty qualities with a lot of long-distance comfort. In order to achieve this, it was the first mass-produced motorcycle to have a fairing that was mounted on the frame. The world had never seen that before. But she quickly got used to it, also because the boxer advocates stuck to the RS concept over the years and into the modern age. Up to the R 1200 ST. The abbreviation already reveals it: From now on it was all about sport touring. Just like the new RS today, the ST was classified between the travel full dresser RT and the naked R. The ST was definitely not a bad motorcycle, but its fairing design with the headlights on top of one another did not meet the general taste – despite the excellent function of the two light dispensers. Therefore, after the construction period, which only lasted from 2005 to 2007, it was over again. And the gap in the BMW program is correspondingly large.

BMW R 1200 RS sensitive and clean from 2000 rpm

But instead of guessing further, it’s time to get excited. What is immediately noticeable is the extra space. With the R, the standard seat height is 790 mm, the BMW R 1200 RS packs three centimeters on it. Or five if the sports pad is ordered. This noticeably relaxes the knee angle. Since the RS is beautifully narrow in the crotch area, types around 170 centimeters always come comfortably to the floor. If you are otherwise afraid of being unsteady, you can simply use the low or extra low bench. Then the very best is only 790 or 760 millimeters high. All variants offer a lot of space to slide back and forth. And since the covers are very adhesive, the bottom always stays where it belongs. The seating arrangement also fits in the second row. Low-lying passenger pegs and a comfortable and sufficiently large upholstery result in a big smile for the passenger.

The BMW R 1200 RS is there at first pressure. It’s amazing how much smoothness BMW has injected into the two 585 cm³ cylinders in the meantime. Even in top gear, the boxer picks up the gas sensitively and cleanly from 2000 revs. That saves concentration and clears your head for turning corners. And the R 1200 RS also masters this discipline splendidly. Equipped with the electronic suspension package Dynamic ESA, the upside-down fork and shock absorber iron out almost any warpage.

ESA swallows feedback

So you can glide smoothly and relaxed over beet fields. However, the front does not report as precisely as conventional forks about the state of the road. The ESA swallows some of the feedback that is expected when braking and turning in as usual. Who boxers are familiar with: That was much more pronounced with the Telelever. Only the first five kilometers in the sloping Eldorado feel strange. After that, your own brain is re-calibrated, and trust and speed with twisting curves increase. The BMW R 1200 RS is pretty good at sport. Little is noticeable of the five hundredweight weight. Even in the ESA Road mode, the boxer turns quickly. In the dynamic setting it gets even better.

Less comfort gives the BMW R 1200 RS a noticeable increase in precision and stability. Anyone who pounds the RS boxer into the corner with such dedication will sooner or later gently rub the nipples of the footrests over the asphalt. For the sport factor in the abbreviation, a little more lean angle would be nice.

Less than 4.5 liters consumption on the country road

What makes the new travel and sports boxer really fast in the thicket of tight turns and wide loops in the street layout is not the abundant special equipment on the test motorcycle, but the engine. A look at the performance curve reveals its performance. From 2500 rpm, the flat twin constantly presses over 100 Newton meters. That makes you sovereign. Especially in the unknown cornering area. Here it’s more cautious at the turn-in point. If the radius is completely recognizable, angled verve before the BMW R 1200 RS is allowed to play the song of praise for torque from the apex. The right supporting gas can be built up extremely smoothly with the Boxer before it can show what it can do with the throttle valve wide open. As is typical for BMW, even in the basic configuration, the ASC stability control takes the horror away from excessive use of the throttle. As with the test bike, this feature can optionally be upgraded with the more sensitive DTC traction control. The advance is correct in any case.

It stays that way even with faster passages or the motorway. Here, the rider in a hurry can rely on the well-protecting cladding including the height-adjustable pane. This can be locked in two positions using a parallelogram mechanism. However, only when standing, as pulling it up requires a strong hand. It’s easier to go down. Additional threads also offer the possibility of fastening the disc significantly higher overall.

This creates the best conditions for trips that should be a little longer. The RS trainer does not have to stop often at gas stations. Less than 4.5 liters of fuel consumption on 100 fun kilometers of country roads take the 18-liter tank to empty after a good 400 kilometers. Even when braking, the BMW R 1200 RS shows no nakedness. Once the minimal free travel on the lever has been overcome, the ABS-assisted system quickly brings the traveler to a standstill. Reliable, safe – even several times in a row, alone and with a passenger.

Slight constant travel jolts and vibrations

With all the praise – is the BMW R 1200 RS really flawless? Almost, but not quite. If the boxer runs at a constant speed, for example when swimming in traffic, you can feel a slight constant jerk. In addition, the motor draws attention to itself with vibrations – the strongest around 3500 revolutions. But they occur almost in the entire speed range. The cranking and width of the handlebars did not fit every MOTORRAD tester equally well, with some of them the motor frequencies tingled noticeably in the driver’s hands. And then there is the transmission, the old BMW construction site. Anyone who shifts from idling to first gear in the city may wonder whether after the clearly audible clone everything will continue to slip as it did on the first day. The mounted automatic gearshift (extra) does a good job during the following gear changes, even allowing upshifts and downshifts without having to use the smooth clutch, but it cannot be used to change gear stages completely silently.

But overall? The BMW R 1200 RS is a well-rounded affair. With its good wind and weather protection, it meets the requirements of sporty kilometer eaters very precisely. With a few more crosses in the right places, these quickly turn the R 1200 RS into a fully-fledged Packmobil. Suitcase and top case racks, heated grips, navigation systems, cruise control, main stand – everything can be ordered and is just an expensive click away. Whereby the price quickly becomes a big one. 13,500 euros are already included in the basic equipment for the RS, which is finally back for the almost 40th anniversary. Better than ever.
