The new benchmark for super athletes?

Content of

When the BMW S 1000 RR first raced in 2010, it sniffed out the competition in rows. After some model maintenance measures in 2012, the Munich-based company has now completely turned the superbike inside out.

Bayern in general and BMW in particular have been heating up people’s hearts since Adam and Eve. “Mir san mir” is something that some of our contemporaries really do on the biscuit, and opinions also differ on the propeller bikes. But one thing is fact: for years, the Munich-based company has been selling most of the machines in this country and is leading the sales statistics for miles. The numbers don’t just refer to pale reason bikes. BMW also set the bar in the supersport sector with the BMW S 1000 RR very high and sold like sliced bread. Before the competitors have really recovered from the beatings, Bayern are now igniting the next expansion stage.

BMW promises an enormous 199 hp for the BMW S 1000 RR, which is six more than the previous model. In addition, the Munich-based company shed a few pounds to 204 kilos (factory specification). Experience shows that the Bavarians indicate the power rather conservatively and so the effective power-to-weight ratio should be very close to one horsepower per kilo. Approved, of course, with mirrors, lights, indicators and standard exhaust – absolute madness! Speaking of exhaust: Instead of a large collector combined with a short tailpipe, the Bavarians are now using a long, double-flow system without a front silencer. “That optimizes the flow and increases performance. In addition, the center of gravity moves up and the new exhaust is three kilos lighter, ”beamed a spokesman. Here the new one clearly plays the motto: Form follows function.

Rear area only slightly changed

Changed shapes also for the fairing: Basically, the BMW S 1000 RR retains the asymmetry of its front. But the low and high beam switched sides, which at first glance distinguishes it from its predecessor. In addition, the duct in between for the air supply is now more massive. On the side, the designers kept the gills (right) and the exhaust air opening (left) and simply freshened up the shapes. BMW also only changed the rear area subtly, after all, you should recognize the superbike straight away.

Despite the increased performance, the drive also has a high recognition value. The BMW S 1000 RR has a great throttle and delivers its performance pleasantly evenly, devious power attacks are nil. That makes her a reliable playmate who only plays her killer punch when the throttle moves to the stop. Then the thousands march like hell, and the frightened eyes of the pilot grow to the size of a plate. In order to conjure up the six additional horsepower in the engine, the Bavarians reached deep into their bag of tricks. In conjunction with the exhaust, not only did the power increase, the torque plateau also increased. “The maximum torque of 113 Nm is almost always between 9500 and 12,000 rpm,” enthuses BMW.

Friends of extensive electronics get their money’s worth

Not only performance fetishists, but also friends of extensive electronics get their money’s worth with the new one. The well-known driving modes “Rain”, “Sport” and “Race” have been reprogrammed, especially the race mode is now more strictly regulated. In addition, the engineers donated the multi-adjustable, optimally functioning traction control (DTC) from the exclusive superbike BMW HP4 to the racer. The catch: The newly tuned system costs extra, as standard the BMW S 1000 RR only houses the simpler ASC automatic stability control. In addition, the high-performance traction control can only be adjusted with the “Pro driving modes” feature, which is also subject to a surcharge. In its slick mode, the ABS regulates very late, allows the rear wheel to lift off and drifts on braking, thus allowing ultra-late braking points. The system has recently come from Conti; it does not (yet) offer innovative ABS cornering.

The “User” driving mode offers the option of combining preset properties of other modes such as throttle response, power delivery or engine braking torque as required. Launch control (race start help) and a pit lane speed limiter are also on board with the additional modes. If you want, you can also order a cruise control – a real, but at least questionable, novelty for a super sports car. On the other hand, we can warmly recommend the “HP Shift Assistant Pro”. In addition to quick upshifts, the Quickshifter also allows you to change gears when downshifting without having to grip the clutch, keyword “blipper” function. In combination with the standard reversible shift pattern – first gear up, rest down – the system is a fabulous feature for the race. When it comes to electronics, the BMW S 1000 RR actually outshines its predecessor by worlds.

Slight undercarriage unrest with full attack

Electronics have recently also determined the damping work of the fork and shock absorber. Like the traction control, the DDC (= Dynamic Damping Control) chassis, which is of course extra costly, comes from the BMW HP4 and has been finely tuned. The spring elements work very convincingly and react reliably to different driving conditions. Only when accelerating hard out of corners does the BMW S 1000 RR occasionally begin to stir significantly. In addition, it dances nervously with its stern when anchoring brutally. In addition to the basic damping setup, the unrest could also originate from the clearly changed geometry in the direction of handling in combination with the changed flexibility of the main frame. Unfortunately, a clear cause could not be found in the short time, a detailed test is firmly planned.

On the other hand, it is already clear today: When the (technically unchanged) stoppers at the end of the long start / finish straight of the Circuito Monteblanco in southern Spain have to destroy over 200 km / h, the pressure point of the brake lever moves a little towards the handlebars. In addition, the effect subsides slightly at the end. But before all the alarm bells ring: there is absolutely no question of nasty fading or even a sagging of the lever. Despite these anomalies, one thing is certain: the BMW S 1000 RR is pushing the boundaries once again and will probably remain the number one enemy in the future for the competition.
