Adventure bike reissued

EICMA 2019

BMW presents a new edition of the S 1000 XR at the EICMA in Milan. The adventure bike will get numerous new features in the 2020 model year.

After the new superbike BMW S 1000 RR has already rolled out to customers, BMW also has the BMW on its basis S. 1000 XR thoroughly revised for the coming year. BMW has given the adventure bike a new engine, a new chassis and lots of new equipment. This should make the new S 1000 XR significantly lighter, more manoeuvrable and agile, without losing any of its long-distance suitability.

New engine five kilograms lighter

In principle, the new, Euro 5-compliant inline four-cylinder engine is based on the drive of the S 1000 RR. The new engine, which should now be five kilograms lighter, develops 165 hp at 11,000 rpm. The maximum torque is 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm. In addition, the gears have been translated four to six longer, which is said to have made the bike quieter overall. The changes should also have a positive effect on fuel consumption. In the course of the revisions, the anti-hopping clutch should also have become smoother. In addition, BMW has given the new S 1000 XR a so-called engine drag torque control (MSR), which is supposed to help prevent the rear wheel from slipping when the accelerator is suddenly released or when downshifting. The engine comes from the current S 1000 RR, but for the XR it has longer gears and no shift cam technology.

In addition to the new engine, BMW has also completely redesigned the chassis. The frame and swing arm have been slimmed down by 2.1 kilograms. In the new model, the engine takes on a more supporting role. The new two-arm swing arm reduces the unsprung weight by 1.6 kilograms. The response behavior should also have become more sensitive thanks to the directly hinged shock absorber. The electronic chassis Dynamic ESA is standard on board. The new valve technology should also have a positive effect on driving behavior and comfort. As an option, the new S 1000 XR can also be equipped with the Dynamic ESA Pro equipment variant, which provides two damping modes and automatic load compensation. In addition, a dynamic brake assistant called DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) should provide support during braking.

The BMW S 1000 XR will receive a lot of updates for 2020, for example a new engine.

Four driving modes and cornering ABS

The new BMW S 1000 XR comes as standard with the four driving modes “Rain”, “Road”, “Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro”. In particular, the last-mentioned and fully configurable Pro mode, which is standard on the XR for the first time, is likely to generate increased interest. In Pro mode, throttle response, engine brake, ABS control, traction and wheelie control can be configured separately from each other. Speaking of ABS: BMW has given the XR the premium version, which should also serve well in an inclined position. Hill start assist is also standard on board.

BMW has not yet commented on the price.

Another new feature is a 6.5-inch TFT screen on which various information is displayed. All standard information is displayed in the so-called pure ride screen. In the core screen mode, information on banking, deceleration and traction control is displayed. There is also a mode that shows a status overview of the vehicle. It is operated using a switch on the handlebar. In addition, BMW is equipping the new model with new LED lighting elements and optionally with adaptive headlights. When it comes to brakes, BMW relies on a floating 320 double disc brake with radially attached four-piston fixed calipers. A 220 single-disc brake is used at the rear. The tank holds 20 liters. The seat height is specified as 840 mm.

Optics also revised

BMW has also made minor adjustments to the look of the vehicle. The design has become a bit sportier and more dynamic compared to the Vogangerin. The new BMW S 1000 XR is available in the colors “Ice Gray” and “Racing Red / White Aluminum”. As is typical of the brand, the new XR can be customized with lots of new components or assistance systems from the range of accessories. The new S 1000 XR will be available from 16,950 euros. It can be ordered immediately.

Conclusion

BMW has given the new S 1000 XR lots of new and modern features that we already know from other BMW models. The new setup should look good on the adventure bike.
