Rarities under the hammer

Content of

The Bonhams auction house auctioned over 200 motorcycles, including rarities, racing motorcycles and vehicles from prominent previous owners, on Sunday, April 23, 2017 in Stafford / England (between Birmingham and Manchester).

One of the most promising objects was hidden behind lot # 218: the 250cc Grand Prix Ducati with a desmodromic in-line twin cylinder (engine number originally DB21, overprinted with DB22). Mike Hailwood won her debut race in 1960, the “Hutchinson 100” in Silverstone, and improved the lap record for 250 cc.

The motorcycle was later owned by the recently deceased Formula 1 and motorcycle world champion John Surtees, who had Ken Sprayson design a new frame for this Ducati.

The 1960s Ducati 250cc DOHC Grand Prix Racing had been estimated by an expert at a value of 95,000 to 120,000 euros, but no buyer was found at the Bonhams auction; the same applied to the 1958 Ducati 125 cc Trialbero (large picture).

In addition, Bonhams in Stafford offered, among other things:

  • a 1912 Williamson 964cc 8HP, estimate 42,000 to 48,000 euros – offer withdrawn
  • a 1923 FN 8HP 750 T Four, estimate 32,000 to 38,000 euros – sold for 34,340 euros

  • a 1958 Ducati 125cc Trialbero, estimate 32,000 to 39,000 euros – not sold

The list must end at this point; one does not even know which specimens to mention. Details about the auction, all lots and the prices achieved can be found under www.bonhams.com/stafford.
