This motorcycle needs persuasion. The mighty format frightens many, but after a test drive everyone is caught under the spell of the king.

Suzuki B-King from the first model years.

More than ten years ago, the motorcycle community was turned on its head: Suzuki presented a brutal eye-catcher with a supercharged engine from the Hayabusa at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2001. But the B-King remains a pure study for years, even if the scene is hooked and wants the powerhouse. It doesn’t help that ex-racing driver Katja Poensgen appears in the ex-motorcycle magazine “mopped” with the B-King in poster format or that Suzuki dealer Joachim Hertrampf from Nordhorn knitted a Hayabusa into a B-King in 2003 on his own. In 2006 the original was finally available at the Intermot trade fair and almost a year later at dealers. The problem: there it really was. Because in real life, the 184-horsepower part scared off many interested parties with its massive appearance. Pragmatists turned to the B-King, but turned to the comparatively filigree 1250 Bandit. And the PS junkies prefer to stay with the Hayabusa, which scores with real wind protection and touring suitability. “The customer,” says Suzuki dealer Walter Ziegler from Neustadt / Donau, “simply has to experience the motorcycle. Only then does it work! ”Ziegler manages almost 40 B-kings in his customer base:“ After almost every test drive, the motorcycle was as good as sold! ”Because thanks to the first-class chassis, the 259 kilos can be moved almost playfully. “To ride good-naturedly and predictably”, judged the MOTORRAD top test. This is also convincing in the long term. “For my customers,” explains Ziegler, “the B-King is an acquisition for life”.

Originalheimers will have a hard time finding a B-King that suits their needs. Because the Suzi is usually retrofitted with zero mileage before the handover inspection at the authorized dealer. Biggest construction site: the underseat exhaust hidden under two opulent covers. Nine out of ten B-Kings that Suzuki dealer Frank Flesch from Gelsenkirchen (www.oeler.de) looks after are equipped with accessory rear silencers, but mostly with expensive high-end parts like those from Suzuki’s in-house tuner Yoshimura. This experience is also shared by other Suzuki workshops. Further points of attack for the customizer: license plate holders and LED indicators. It is definitely worth asking about any original parts that are still available when viewing the site. Otherwise, the B-King shines in the authorized workshops with its reliability: “A typical pass-through”, explains the Frankfurt dealer Holger Funk (www.holgers-zweirad-shop.de). Problems are not known, the controller affected by the recall should have been replaced on all B-Kings by now.

Hard to hear: the eye-catching original silencers are frowned upon in the B-King community and are quickly exchanged.

Dedicated dealers who literally press the B-King on their customers’ eyes have no sales problems. For others, on the other hand, new motorcycles built in 2008 and are gathering dust. 2009. Private sellers of used B-Kings can have a hard time: The “old” new vehicles depress the price of well-maintained used vehicles with low mileage. For royal candidates, this means a good basis for tough price negotiations. However, this fact is made more difficult by the only moderately busy private market: B-King drivers are reluctant to move their vehicle out. It really starts at 7,500 euros for 2008 B-Kings, which were first registered in 2007. ABS models are very sparsely offered, for them at least a thousand must be added. Demonstrators and daily permits are available from 10,000 euros. In return, the equivalent value with well-maintained fair-weather machines and an opulent extra list, from the luggage system to the adjustable footrest system.
