Motorcycle bargains at the end of the year
Attractive offers during the winter break

Many a large banknote can stay in the bike buyer’s wallet because many new vehicles are being offered at bargain prices at the end of the year.

Gerhard Eirich

11/25/2010

The year goes by, the new models are coming. They could be admired at the autumn trade fairs in Cologne and Milan, and soon they are in the dealers’ showrooms. But for this they need space. In addition, it is advisable for dealers to bring the bikes in stock from 2010 or even 2009 to the customer this year before the calendar shows 2011 and stamps the bike on the old plane. So golden times for bargain hunters to look for a new bike with zero kilometers on the clock for the price of a used one. Finally, discounts on the recommended retail price of sometimes over 20, in some cases even over 30 percent are included. In the age of the Internet and globalization, the first route usually no longer leads to the dealer on the corner, but to the computer to view the offers on Internet platforms such as mobile.de, motoscout24.de or 1000ps.de/gebrauchte-motorraeder. Here you can find the bargain prices quickly, but the coveted bike is often at dealerships on the other side of the country.

No problem actually: you can have the bike delivered to your doorstep by one of the numerous commercial bike transporters. Depending on the size of the vehicle (usually staggered according to the displacement) and the distance, this costs between 79 and around 170 euros. Even a new vehicle should not be bought unseen, after all, even a bike in the sales room is subject to certain signs of age and can already show signs of use. Anyone who is personally on the mat at the dealer can have the terms of the contract explained to them on site and, if necessary, clarify the guarantee question. It should be clear when the warranty period begins, especially important for vehicles with a daily registration that was some time ago. Some manufacturers offer an extension of the warranty period up to four years for a small fee, and some external insurers also provide this service. This does not affect the dealer’s warranty. Disadvantage in case of any trouble: the bike has to be taken to the dealer to clarify and possibly repair the damage – annoying if the dealer is 700 kilometers away.

Who grants the biggest discounts? This year, manufacturers / importers are very reluctant to offer official special promotions. If at all, there are accessories or clothing for free when you buy a bike, or packages are put together for specific target groups such as newcomers to driving licenses. Only Kawasaki and Suzuki officially have specific discounts for certain models: Kawasaki is advertising the almost legendary jackpot models again this year, and Suzuki is rolling out numerous new vehicles (some with daily registration) as part of the Best Price Bikes campaign Built between 2007 and 2009 at affordable prices. The price pressure on the free market is great, however, and even these preferential prices are often undercut by dealers.

By the way: If you want to sell your little-used previous year’s model again next year and switch to another one, you should consider that the used value is measured, among other things, according to the year of construction. And the bike is already two or even three years old. The amount saved on the purchase is then used again in the form of the lower resale value. With all the stinginess and fun of buying a bargain, don’t forget to include the local dealer in your considerations. Because you can hardly avoid it for service and repair work, and on request it can often even offer a similarly good price as the far-away competition. But be careful with overly researching inheritance claims: If you put the price knife on the chest of the retailer when buying, you should not be surprised later if he then simply turns the blade. After all, the following applies: the best deal is one in which both contracting parties are satisfied.

Aprilia

Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

manufacturer

Aprilia RSV 1000 R – from 8990 euros: -37%

The importer himself does not start any special promotions at the end of the year. The dealers still grant generous discounts. Discontinued models like the RSV 1000 R can only be sold with substantial discounts. Bikes like the Mana 850 find their buyers only too clearly without the ABS, which is now almost a matter of course, sometimes with a price reduced by more than 3000 euros. But the new Aprilia super sports car RSV4 is already being offered with discounts of up to 22 percent.

Aprilia RSV 1000 R:
The beautiful super athlete was the sharpest weapon in the Aprilia range for many years until it was replaced by the new, more powerful RSV4. The 143 hp of the discarded lady with the excellent chassis are also sufficient for brisk driving performance. 2008 models can be found for just under 9,000 euros.

BMW

BMW G 650 Xmoto – from 6290 euros: -28%

When it comes to autumn offers, the Bavarians limit themselves to special offers for new drivers as well as to particularly lavishly equipped special models and do not offer any special discount campaigns. Of course, BMW dealers also have to watch as they make previous year’s models and models of superseded series attractive to customers. The K 1200 (built in 2008 or earlier), replaced by the 1300 variant, is available in R, S or GT versions at a price well over 20 percent lower. A real bargain can be made with the purchase of the discontinued model G 650 Xmoto.

BMW G 650 Xmoto:
The Supermoto with the 53 hp, economical single cylinder can even be found with the ABS on board, which is subject to a surcharge, at a price of almost 6300 euros, i.e. over 3000 euros below the previous list price. However, the nimble jester is not for short-legged people.

Honda

Honda relies on free accessories instead of discounts. If you are simply looking for a new Honda at particularly favorable conditions, you will also find it, because the dealers sometimes offer very cheap 2009 or even 2008 models. So, buyers will find next to the ones shown here CBF 1000 and Fireblade also the super sporty CBR 600 RR (built in 2008) with a price reduction of over 3000 euros. Almost 3400 euros, i.e. over 26 percent, can be saved on the not very successful DN-01 (built in 2010).

Honda CBF 1000

Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

Honda CBF 1000 – from 7990 euros: -20%

Some dealers offer the brilliant all-rounder CBF 1000 ABS, born in 2009, for 7990 euros, i.e. 2000 euros below the list price. As an extremely uncomplicated, safe to drive bike for every day, the CBF has long made a name for itself with its beefy four-cylinder.

Honda Fireblade

Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

archive

Honda Fireblade – from 10299 euros: -25%

If you can do without the ABS, which was not yet offered at the beginning, you can make a real bargain with a 2008 Fireblade for 10,299 euros and save a quarter of the original price of 13,760 euros.

Kawasaki

As one of the few manufacturers who lure with special promotions, Kawasaki trumps with its jackpot campaign. The savings with the jackpot models are between 300 and 2100 euros, all from the year of construction 2010. Especially the ZX-10R (with 12 495 a proud 2100 euros cheaper) and VN 1700 Voyager (1000 euros cheaper) entice with a big discount. Several hundred euros can also be saved when buying a VN 900, Versys, KLX 250, KLX 125 or D-Tracker 125.

Kawasaki ZX-10R

Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

archive

Kawasaki ZX-10R – from 9590 euros: -32%

Even if it may be a ten from 2009, the sports fan can save a whopping five thousand at some dealers: 9590 euros for the 188 hp super sports car is a word.

Kawasaki ER-6n

Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

archive

Kawasaki ER-6n – from 5390 euros: -20%

Twenty percent discount on a bike that practically sells itself and ranks fourth in the new registration statistics? Okay, that applies to ER-6n from the year of construction 2009. However, the Kawa, which was newly renovated for 2009, has not technically changed for the 2010 model year. So the previous year’s version already offers all the advantages of the lively everyday bike with the easy-revving two-cylinder engine.

KTM

Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

archive

KTM 1190 RC8 – from 10290 euros: -36%

Enduros, supermotos and also the super duke models have their fan base and sell well – huge discounts are rare here. The adventurous travel enduro 990 Adventure, on the other hand, has to fight hard against the overpowering BMW R 1200 GS in this segment and can therefore be found at some dealers with discounts of up to almost 2200 euros. Mind you: a 2010 model. KTM dealers are only offering even more discounts for the super sporty 1190 RC8, which got off to a somewhat unlucky start on the sports market.

KTM 1190 RC8:
The great handling, the precise driving behavior and the performance of the 155 hp V2 athlete are convincing. However, the load change behavior and the occasional nonchalance in terms of reliability cost the Austrian points. Are these the reasons for the competitive price of 10,290 euros, at which 2008 copies are already being offered? A saving of around 5700 euros might make some things look overlooked.

MV Agusta

Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

archive

MV Agusta F4 1078 RR 312 – from 15,590 euros: -31%

The inherently high prices leave plenty of room for noticeable discounts in the range of several thousand euros. The support from the factory / importer was limited to the addition of clothing or other extras and unfortunately only lasted until the end of October. On the other hand, the Brutale 989 Rs from the year 2009 are still up-to-date. At 4170 euros, they save over a quarter of the list price of 16150 euros.

MV Agusta F4 1078 RR 312:
A rare Italian beauty in a class of its own for the price of an ordinary Japanese athlete? MV Agusta makes it possible. The top model of the F4 series, which once cost 22,490 euros, shows off the factory specification for the top speed (312 km / h) in the model name as well as the finest add-on parts and excellent chassis. For 15,590 euros, the suffering Italo fan can now afford this uncomfortable dream in everyday life and prefer to chase the MV over the racetrack.

Suzuki

As part of the Best Price Bikes campaign, Suzuki offers many models from the years of construction 2009, 2008 and even 2007 (with and without daily registration) at special rates. However, only while stocks last. So it is important to access it quickly if you want to get hold of a 2007 Hayabusa for a mere 8990 euros, for example.

Triumph still gives buyers of a Street Triple, Daytona, Thunderbird or Speed Triple clothing and accessories worth 675 to 800 euros, depending on the model. Last year’s models are hardly on offer anymore, only for them Rocket III Some dealers give cruisers huge discounts.

Triumph Rocket III Touring:
The fat touring cruiser has to be removed from the farm, some dealers will probably say and can drop up to 30 percent off the list price. In plain language: instead of 19,990, the customer only pays 13,990 euros. A fair price for almost 400 kilograms of bike with an official 2.3 liter displacement.

Yamaha

No special tariffs from the factory / importer side, but still strong discounts from dealers for some models – this is the situation Yamaha In addition to the YZF-R6 and YZF-R1 athletes, the TDM 900, the FZ1 Fazer and the XVS 1300A also enjoy juicy discounts. Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

archive

Yamaha MT-01 – from 9999 euros: -23%

The pounding, powerfully pushing prehistoric creature is not for everyone, therefore not a best seller. The ones ordered sparingly by dealers anyway MT-01 have to get out now, some at a bargain price of 9999 euros. Anyone who likes beefy V2 engines in the stiff chassis should take it.

Buell

Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

archive

Buell 1125 R – from 7,999 euros: -38%

It is true: Buell no longer builds new motorcycles. But there is still a lot in stock, and some of these are brought to fans of the American brand at extremely low prices. Harley Davidson grants the usual two-year manufacturer’s guarantee and promises to guarantee the supply of spare parts for a long time. So no problem buying a Buell? Well, if you have a Harley dealer close by, you should take it easy. Rarely do you have such a chance to purchase exotic products with classic potential so cheaply.

Buell 1125 R:
Radical construction, unusual technical solutions, extravagant styling – a Buell has always been different. The 1125R with the 148 hp V2 developed by Rotax also drives differently than other super sports cars. Not better, but not really bad either. Some dealers offer the Buell, which is officially expensive at 12,899 euros, at terrific prices: the 1125R can be stolen from as little as 7,999 euros.

Interview with the managing director of Motorcorner

Buying advice: bargains at the end of the year

archive

Stefan Wahl, the managing director of the Motorcorner company in Goppingen.

“Our vehicle stock is limited”

As managing director of the company Motorcorner in Goppingen, Stefan Wahl is an authorized dealer for the brands KTM, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha

? How is the new vehicle business going at the end of the season? Full stock, hefty discounts?

! The demand is as strong as in the previous year. However, like many other dealers, we counteracted excessively large stocks at an early stage this year. Of course, we can make our customers very cheap offers this autumn, but, unlike in the past, we are not stifling in last year’s models.

? Which models sell well and which don’t?

! The supersport sector, which has been pretty strong for years, has weakened somewhat, but demand is still quite good. The cruiser market has proven to be generally quite stable and without major seasonal fluctuations. Bargains are most likely to be found among athletes, for example we can currently offer the current Yamaha R1 for around 2000 euros below the list price.

? Are there special promotions and advertising measures of their own, since manufacturers and importers have been holding back this year?

! We hardly do any advertising in the true sense of the word, we prefer to present our offers on the internet on well-known platforms such as mobile.de, in order to also address nationwide customers.

Tips and hints

Compare: First use several sources to determine the price and also visit dealers in the area, do not spontaneously buy the most tempting bargain. Sometimes the dealer around the corner can offer a similarly good price on request. And in any case, he can offer the better service.

Check condition: It is not entirely risk-free to buy the bike remotely over the phone and have it delivered to you. Due to the long downtime at the dealer, even a new vehicle can already show damage such as scratches from maneuvering or have old tires on it. Better to look at it beforehand.

guarantee: Important for previous year’s models or daily registrations: What is in the contract, when does the guarantee period begin? Some manufacturers and external companies offer a warranty extension of up to four years for a fee. The dealer’s warranty obligation is regulated by law and is always two years from vehicle handover.

transport: If the bike is at a distant dealer, take transport costs into account. Rent a trailer or van or hire one of the numerous companies that deliver the bike (depending on the displacement and distance) for around 80 to 170 euros.

New registrations of motorcycles in the course of the year in Germany

After a late but furious start (the long, hard winter had a noticeable effect) and a subsequent significant slump, new registrations have been leveling off at the previous year’s level since June. In total, the registration numbers are only slightly below the previous year’s figures.
