Performance is often completely overestimated. When 90 horsepower meets 267 kilograms plus the rider, it doesn’t necessarily cause reverent astonishment among motorcyclists these days. For free. But when the same 267 kilograms plus driver crashes into the rear shortly after engaging the clutch and just above idling speed, the world looks very different in terms of awe. So, now replace the wrecking ball with torque and please realize that fat Vauzwo is the MT-01 already lifts a whopping 100 Nm at a modest 1200 rpm and reaches its maximum of 150 Nm at 3750 tours. Not really, but the relentless downward trend in the MT-01 sales figures unfortunately shows that it is still the performance lemmings who ensure sales success. Well-made, divine-sounding, powerfully pushing, surprisingly handy, pleasantly sporty to move and absolutely reliable total works of art such as the MT-01, which has been offered since 2005, fall by the wayside. But the importer is sorry for the used buyer Freud, as he usually gets a collector’s item from a very careful first hand that immediately does what a very good motorcycle should do: to put a big grin on the driver’s face.

When it comes to MT-01 reliability, the Yamaha dealers surveyed are in agreement: Completely problem-free, runs simply, no typical quirks known – the Lanz Bulldog among motorcycles.

But this does not automatically mean that workshop appointments for the MT-01 are unnecessary, because at least three official Yamaha recalls are known.

As there are: possible breakage of the reversing lever, affects the chassis numbers JYARP121-000301 to JYARP121-011175 and JYARP181-000301 to JYARP181-001239.

A defective throttle position sensor can cause the engine to stall when idling for long periods of time. Affected: JYARP121-0000301 through JYARP121-0006312.

The hinge of the rearview mirror can break on the following machines and cause the mirrors to fall off: JYARP18100000001 to JYARP181000002563.

The MT-01 is very often converted (exhaust, rear, indicators, handlebars, mirrors), so check the entry or certificate.

The Stage 1 kit with the great sounding Akrapovic exhaust made the MT-01 a single-seater in the beginning. From the end of 2005, however, Yamaha supplied covers for pillion rides.

Market situation
Perhaps apart from the first model year, the MT-01 was practically never sold at list price. It was brand new for 10,000 euros for the heyday of the rubbish. And yet the new business ran more and more slowly and is now almost dead. What is offered as a new machine today is often a 2009 model – which does not have to be a bad thing, because since then there has been practically no further model updates. For relatively young used cars, who may still be pimped up with expensive accessories, the (price) air is therefore pretty thin, from 9,000 euros it gets really tough for sellers. At the other end of the price spectrum, however, the MT-01 holds its own very well, because thanks to experienced first owners who treat their sweetheart with care, there are practically no used cucumbers that are ridden down. Things rarely go below 7000 euros. The MT-01 is a typical collector’s item that is absolutely targeted. The “running against” common with all-rounders does not exist with her.
