Storm and rain ?? natural enemies of motorcyclists and campers alike. MOTORRAD wanted to know which outdoor equipment would best withstand the rigors of nature and went out into the wild. The experience report can be found in MOTORRAD 14/2009 (see link for content). Here the camping specialists give further tips for life outside.

Tips and Tricks

time

?? Always pack the tent dry if it is to be stored for a longer period of time. Otherwise mold will form.
?? Do not sweep the tent out, but rather shake it out to protect the coating.
?? Choose your campsite carefully! Watch out if thorns, sharp stones and small branches could endanger the subsoil during construction. Also check whether the chosen pitch could turn into a water basin when it rains or whether a river / stream that is too close could overflow its banks. Branches could fall onto the tent in a storm?
?? If it is windy, first fix the tent with pegs, this makes it easier to set up. Place the entrance on the leeward side.
?? Do not brutally hit pegs in the ground. It is better to extend the anchoring point with a tent cord or clothesline and look for a more suitable place.
?? The only thing that helps against condensation is ventilation, so keep the entrances slightly open if necessary.

If the weather turns bad, a sufficiently large apse is extremely important.

Sleeping bag

?? For laundry, especially for down sleeping bags, we recommend using special detergents that preserve the fat content of the down
?? Wash only one sleeping bag per machine, do not use fabric softener
?? It is better to run the wash program twice. When hand washing, rinse out the detergent several times with clear water.
?? Never wring out the sleeping bag, instead squeeze it out carefully and then let it air dry.
?? When drying in a machine dryer, add two or three tennis balls. Do not dry warmer than 40 ° C. Dryers in the washing center with their large drums are more suitable than the machine at home.
?? Never use the narrow packing bag for storage, rather a bed or a spacious pillowcase. It is ideal to hang the sleeping bag on a hanger in a protective bag for clothes / suits in the closet.
?? Avoid frequent washing. It is better to ventilate extensively. Down sleeping bags should still be washed at least once a year, otherwise the down will stick together due to dirt and the salts and oils from human perspiration

Others

?? Take small pillowcases with you. Filled with a sweater or fleece jacket, this is a perfect headrest that gives you a real “home feeling”. conveyed.
?? Put a mini hot water bottle or pocket stove in the sleeping bag about 15 minutes before going to bed. Works wonders for people who are sensitive to the cold.
?? Large, interlocking Havel cups (available in specialist shops) are suitable for breakfast muesli, soup and as a substitute for spaghetti plates. It makes sense and saves space if you can do without plates and cups.
?? Install a socket on the motorcycle, if not already available (DIY kits are available from electronics stores such as Conrad, etc.), and use an LED light as night-time lighting powered by the motorcycle battery.
?? To keep food warm, first cover the pot with a towel and also with the insulating sleeping bag.
?? The cooling fins of an old boxer are good as a toaster for stale bread after a busy day’s hike.

Last but not least – tips on packing:

Below you can download a packing list – which can of course be expanded according to your personal taste. When it comes to personal equipment for the driver and passenger, it is advisable to choose functional clothing that is as light as possible (fleece jacket, trekking pants, etc.) that dries easily and is therefore easy to wash during the trip. Dishwashing detergent, shampoo and sun lotion can all be poured into small film jars to save space. Soft items such as sleeping bags, the tent, sleeping mats or a tarp find their place in the luggage roll, which is lashed with straps on the luggage rack, for the sake of order, the personal equipment comes in a thin nylon bag, which in turn is stowed in a suitcase.

The equipment mentioned should be understood as a recommendation. With this or a comparable piece of equipment, a comfortable outdoor vacation with the motorcycle can be realized. Have lots of fun with it.
