In the middle of the tenth Glemseck 101 near Leonberg is a single-cylinder BMW. It was once white, now it is eggshell-colored and reddish-brown with rusty spots.

The 125cc CZ 476 and a Suzuki GT 125 that he drove in front of the BMW R 25 show that oldies have always played an important role in the life of the 20-year-old. Even when he goes on tour with an XF 650 Freewind and romps around with a Husqvarna Supermoto and his KTM Enduro on and off the beaten track.

In the meantime Jeff has fixed the electrics of the 60-year-old single cylinder, “better safe than sorry”. He is also currently building a Ducati Desmo 350 and converting a BMW R 100 R into a Scrambler.

The young Belgian is very familiar with motorcycles, trained as a metal designer and then trained as a two-wheel mechanic at BMW. He is currently working as an engine reconditioner.

“What a coincidence,” says Jeff, “the registered BMW owner was born on December 22nd and is a welder by profession. I was born on December 19th and I am a welder … “

Jeff bought the nameplate of a R 25/3, built in 1955, including original GDR vehicle documents and import permit from April 5, 1966 from capitalist West to socialist East Germany on Ebay for a possible registration.

What did he have to do about it? Drain the old gasoline and put in new one.

The R 25 was previously owned by the Eupen Carnival Association, which once used it as the “Carnival Police”. Therefore, “Ope Alaaf” is still written on the tank.

Suspension? Braking force? The BMW gives a vague idea what it could be all about.

Under the motto rust meets leaks, a slightly oily motor housing and a leaky carburetor have come together here. A cloth seals this off to some extent.

Is it all just a retro look? Rather no. A barn find, the BMW stood abandoned for between ten and 15 years.

His girlfriend Jody, who was there for the first time in 2014, dragged him to Glemseck 101. Let’s see what Jeff brings to Glemseck 101 next year.

It is sometimes only a small step from a barn find to a total work of art on the move. At least with the Glemseck 101, as this BMW R 25 shows.

September 2015: For the tenth time, “Glemseck 101”, the largest brand and type of motorcycle meeting in Germany, takes place at Leonberg. There’s nothing here that doesn’t exist – from Zundapp and Hercules mopeds to all sorts of young timers to huge Boss Hoss V8 machines. In the midst of the turmoil of crowds and motorbikes, a single-cylinder BMW stands tightly surrounded. It was probably once white, is now eggshell-colored and reddish-brown, rust-flecked. Shortly afterwards, the obvious owner rattles around on the 250. Sounds pretty robust, the single.

No rear light, no license plate, no connection between manifold and exhaust – all no problem at the extremely relaxed event. When the driver comes back and turns off the crackling engine, the young guy introduces himself: “Hello, my name is Jeff.” He’s 20, but his mobile pedestal is easily 60: “This is my BMW R 25, I’ve only got it in front of me Bought three days as a barn find. ”Ten to 15 years the poor motorcycle, year of construction unknown, was rotting in the forgotten corner of a workshop. “Unfortunately, she got a lot of water through the perforated roof,” says Jeff.

A rolling total work of art

According to the circumstances, the condition of the machine, which is still really produced in Bavaria, is really good. “I spontaneously decided to take it to Glemseck 101, just drained the old fuel from the tank and carburetor. A BMW like that always runs! ”To prove it, Jeff takes the slightly oily single again. The aged bumper motor with a camshaft underneath and 13 hp comes on the first step. It runs amazingly smoothly without stuttering. And, amazingly, without any scary mechanical noises.

Quite remarkable, because indefinable old oil still sloshes in the engine, gearbox and cardan. Spark plug and battery (freshly charged) still do. A cloth seals the leaking carburetor as a makeshift seal. The 19-inch spoked wheels have old, hardened tires. BMW specialist Hans-Joachim Siebenrock arrives in amazement. His tip: “Don’t restore it, it’s way too much effort. The way the motorcycle stands here, it is a rolling work of art. “

Upholstered bench instead of swinging saddle

And a real eye-catcher. Jeff comes from the city of Eupen in eastern Belgium, is trilingual and has German as his mother tongue. He bought the BMW R 25 from the Eupen Carnival Association, which once used it as “Carnival Police”. Therefore, “Ope Alaaf” is still written on the tank.

According to initial research, Jeff is only the fifth owner. This BMW stood for a long time back in the 1970s and was hardly noticed. Many pieces of the puzzle from the history of this 250 are still missing: It has neither a nameplate nor a frame number, and has no papers. The two-wheeler oldie with the half-hub brakes of an R 25/2 “is a mish-mash to the power of three”, wonders Jeff. “Almost all BMW R 25s have classic swing saddles, but mine has a thickly padded seat.”

“Importe d’Allemagne” is embossed in the chrome of the Bosch headlight – shortly after the war, a reference to an import into France or the Walloon part of Belgium. Maybe as a former government vehicle? Jeff is still looking for information about the history of his BMW R 25, please contact geoffrey.grandjean@live.de.

“I want mechanics, not 7 kilos of tangled cables”

For a potential registration Jeff bought the nameplate of a BMW R 25/3, built in 1955, including original GDR vehicle documents and import permit from April 5, 1966 from capitalist West to socialist East Germany on Ebay. There, Hans G. (born 1922) in Brandenburg an der Havel was assigned the GDR license plate DO 42-49. “What a coincidence,” says Jeff, “the registered BMW owner was born on December 22nd and is a welder by profession. I was born on December 19th and a professional welder … “

The young Belgian is very familiar with motorcycles, trained as a metal designer and then trained as a two-wheel mechanic at BMW. He is currently working as an engine repairer. “At BMW I had to do with beautiful modern motorcycles every day, but also a lot with computers and electronics. Replacing instead of repairing – that’s not for me. I want mechanics that still work after 60 years, not seven kilos of tangled cables. ”Just like his brave BMW.

In the meantime Jeff has fixed the electrics of the 60-year-old single cylinder, “better safe than sorry”. He is also currently building a Ducati Desmo 350 and converting a BMW R 100 R into a Scrambler.
