Cleaning the motorcycle

Clean and maintain the motorcycle
Clean motorcycle – safe motorcycle

You don’t have to overdo it with the cleanliness, but every now and then the motorcycle is happy to have a fresh shine. And it also helps drive safety.

A well-maintained motorcycle not only looks a lot better, it also lasts longer. Because with regular care you not only recognize wear and tear or any defects at an early stage, you can even prevent them from time to time. A basic range of chemical aids such as aluminum and paint care products, oils, greases and cleaners together cost around 50 euros, but the significantly lower loss in value of the motorcycle exceeds this amount many times over. Or would you want to pay as much for a worn-out used bike as you would for a well-maintained one?

You can read on this page which little remedies should not be missing in any workshop cupboard and what they are good for. The products are available everywhere in specialist shops, sometimes in DIY stores or in motorcycle accessories shops, from Hein Gericke, Louis, Polo and others.

Funds for the workshop cabinet

(300 ml between five and ten euros)
Sunlight causes rubber, plastics and painted parts to dull and fade. Even worse when cracks and porous areas appear. To prevent this, only special agents such as silicone spray or paint and plastic polish can help, which preserve the deep shine and elasticity. Under no circumstances should multi-oils be used on rubber stoppers, intake manifolds, plastic panels or the windshield, as they remove plasticizers and cause plastic, rubber and paint to age faster.

Complete cleaner
(between ten and 20 euros per liter)
Good products stick to dirty surfaces as a gel. Do not use in the blazing sun and only leave it on for a few minutes on the cooled motorcycle before rinsing it off with a strong jet of water. Otherwise aluminum parts may tarnish. The dirt dissolves as if by magic and with a little cleaning the motorcycle is sparkling clean again. Bathing day does not have to be once a week, but it should be done regularly so that the dirt does not even settle in the first place.

Chain spray
(400 ml can for ten euros)
When spraying the chain: plenty on the inside, moderate on the outside. When a narrow streak forms in the middle of the tread, it’s time to grease. Rule: it is better to apply more often and sparingly than rarely and thickly. Let it work for at least 15 minutes before starting your journey so that the agent can creep into all the cracks. Tip: Many vendors have small fillings for out and about, which can be stowed well under the bench.

Creeping / multi-oil
(200 to 500 ml can for five euros)
Ideal for lubricating and preserving small bearings, hand and foot levers or locks. Even creeps into places that are extremely difficult to access, displacing moisture that otherwise promotes corrosion. The creeping or multi-oils also loosen stubborn dirt such as chain grease or brake abrasion particles from the rim, swing arm, silencer and other metal surfaces.

Universal grease
(400 ml can for ten euros)
Main and side stand mechanics, wheel, swing arm and steering head bearings – tough grease lubricates much more permanently at these points than oil. An application during every major maintenance – at least once a year – guarantees permanent function and durability.

Aluminum and chrome care products
(100 g fillings from five euros)
When complete cleaners and multi-oils wear out heavily soiled, anodized aluminum rims or corroded chrome surfaces, special agents such as Nevr-Dull polishing wadding (for aluminum), the chrome care agent Autosol or corresponding polishes from Rotweiss help.

Brake cleaner
(500 ml from 1.50 euros)
Offer different manufacturers. The liquid, which evaporates quickly, has a strong fat-dissolving effect and works without leaving any residue. When cleaning brake discs and drums, it is essential to wear protective gloves, as the cleaner attacks the skin. Incidentally, it is better to clean the inside of the brake calipers with silicone spray, as the rubber piston sealing rings are very sensitive to brake cleaners.
