Comparative test of winter gloves

Ride a motorcycle or do you prefer to take the bus? With winter clothing and warm gloves, the answer is clear. 14 pairs of winter gloves tested.

Not only in meter-high snow and temperatures below freezing point, it can get very cold when riding a motorcycle. The so-called wind chill factor is responsible for this. This indicates the temperature felt at a certain wind speed. For example, a speed of 40 is enough to reduce the perceived temperature to minus one degree when the outside temperature is plus ten degrees Celsius. With increasing driving and thus wind speed, the perceived temperature drops ever lower.
The extremities are particularly sensitive to cold. So whoever does a long without or only with thin gloves-
If you drive over the track at high speed, you risk the first symptoms of frostbite even when the outside temperature is mild. Especially when it rains, because then everything cools down even faster. Therefore, almost all winter gloves are ideally equipped with a wind- and waterproof membrane. MOTOR got 14 of these models-
RAD in three different sizes to test the finger cots for water resistance, warmth and suitability for use in practice.
The wetness test ran analogously to the last, large glove test in MOTORRAD 19/2003. Two gloves per participant were filled with water to just under the cuff and hung for a good hour, two were immersed in a water bath for five minutes
the tester made constant kneading movements in order to discover leaks more quickly. Overall, the result was quite gratifying. But some models showed severe leaks after a short time ?? likely manufacturing defects. A small hole in the membrane or on one of the many weld seams is enough to get your hands wet. In such cases, the customer has within the warranty period
the right to exchange. So on bes-
ten themselves as quickly as possible-
check ability. In the test, the affected gloves were deducted from the points
the strength of the water ingress (during the immersion test) or water leakage (during the filling test).
The sensation of warmth (cold test)
examined MOTORRAD intensively in frosty temperatures. That was what it was about
including a day on the autobahn, where the test participants had to defy the wind blowing at around 130 km / h at temperatures below zero degrees ?? here it was shown fairly quickly whether gloves were tight and
especially keep warm or not.
The last big sub-item is that
Practical test. After all, what use are tight and warm gloves if, for example, the handlebars can no longer be properly gripped and misshapen fingers prevent the switch from being operated. The properties tested included grip and (finger) mobility, handling (how can the gloves be put on and taken off, how the fasteners operated?), Fit / cut (if the finger length and width is correct, is the thumb on the right one Place, do wrinkles form?), Tight fit (is there a risk that the gloves will be pulled off the palm of your hand in an accident?), Safety (protective protectors, reinforced hand edges, doubled leather) as well as equipment (see also table on page 64 above) and workmanship.
Conclusion of the test: At least eleven couples received at least the MOTORRAD rating as good. At the bottom of the list are the pros from Germas, for whom a poor wetness test thwarted a far better result. The Greenland from Ixs and the Snow-Flake from Held performed very well, and like many other test candidates, they are ideally suited for winter use.
Whether the insulation is down to zero, minus five or even minus ten degrees
Celsius is enough to keep the fingers warm, depends on the personal temperature sensitivity of the wearer? and thus some people might switch to the bus on the way.

Additional protection

If winter gloves are not enough in the cold, the market offers a lot more.

Anyone who is particularly sensitive to the cold or length-
If you’re planning motorcycle rides in very frosty temperatures, there are a whole range of ways to keep your fingers warm.
Three-finger gloves: The putting together of the little and ring fingers as well as the middle and index fingers leads to
the fingers cool down less quickly and enables that-
still ?? even if slightly restricted? operating the levers and switches. Inner gloves: The thin finger cots do not cost anything
a lot and provide an additional-
ches thermal pad. Heating devices: Gloves and undergloves are available in heated versions
Execution. Heating wires, which are connected to the on-board network by cable, provide reliable warming. Heated grips on the handlebars also serve this purpose. Handlebar cuffs: not
for everyone, but effective. Ideal in combination with a heated grip ?? in order to
can then even withstand arctic temperatures without damage. The disadvantage: the switches on the steering controls cannot be seen and are therefore difficult to operate. Except-
this is often difficult-
for example after the visor-
wipe free while driving,
to get back into the gauntlets. Overgloves: The parts originally intended as rain protection are great as additional warmth pads. Mittens: Recommended for passengers because they are very warm, not suitable for drivers due to the poor operability of levers and switches.
