Concept bikes, prototypes and motorcycle concept studies
From concept to production model?

Every now and then the major motorcycle manufacturers delight us with exciting prototypes and concept studies. Every now and then, a concept bike in a modified form also makes it to the production model. There are also prototypes that don’t make it. An overview.

Most motorcycle enthusiasts who are up to date when it comes to new models will be familiar with this: Manufacturer XY is bringing a new prototype or a new concept study that is so visually exciting that your friends’ tears almost roll down your face. But then the question immediately arises: does the bike actually come in the form of a production model? Often times the answer to this question is no. Many manufacturers use such concept studies to provide a glimpse into the future and to show what their own development and design departments can do. Often such concept bikes are simply not feasible according to the current state of technology and sometimes also the legal situation. However, there are exceptions. Some concept bikes come onto the market, mostly in significantly modified form, as series models.  

Examples from Husqvarna, BMW and Honda

It is interesting to observe the path that Husqvarna has been taking since EICMA 2014 in Milan. At that time, the traditional brand owned by KTM presented the Vitpilen and Svartpilen, new prototypes that had caused a sensation with their very futuristic design. But Husqvarna let us fidget for a long time and it took a long time before the suitable series models were actually presented. But the result is impressive. The Husqvarna 401 Vitpilen, Husqvarna 401 Svartpilen and Husqvarna 701 Vitpilen models, which have been available since this year, largely keep what the concept study promised. Of course, the concept bike has been changed here and there, but for the most part the delicious concept elements have been adopted in the production models.

At Honda, on the other hand, there has been a different trend recently. Most of the concept studies presented at the Tokyo Motor Show, such as the Honda Monkey 125, come onto the market in almost identical form as a production model. In addition, the traditional Japanese manufacturer will of course also be presenting brand new and still unknown models at the autumn trade fairs. But even larger concept bikes like the CB 1000 R came after the first presentation in Japan in a similar form as a series model at the major European autumn trade fairs. Honda also uses concept studies to provide a glimpse into the future and into new technologies. A good example is the self-driving concept bike Honda Riding Assist-e, which shows Honda’s vision for the future.

The Tokyo Motor Show is not necessarily a big topic for BMW Motorrad. Rather, the German manufacturer uses the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como for the presentations of exciting concept bikes, which often make it to the production model in a similar, if not quite as futuristic, form. One example of this is the BMW Roadster concept study, which subsequently made it to the BMW R 1200 R series model in a modified form. Incidentally, at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, a new, futuristic sports tourer called the Concept 9cento was presented. It remains to be seen whether there will also be a production model from the concept study. In addition, BMW provides a glimpse into future technologies at specially organized events. The BMW Vision Next 100 concept study should be mentioned here in particular.

And the rest?

The manufacturers mentioned above are just a few randomly selected examples. Also the competitor of Kawasaki, Yamaha & Co. regularly show new concept studies and prototypes, some of which make it to series production and some of which don’t.

There are also concepts that have not yet made it to series production, at least not yet.

In the picture gallery attached above, we have selected some examples that have made it from prototype to production model. In addition, there are some models that were last presented as concept bikes and of which we know that the production model is already in the starting blocks. Last but not least, we have selected a few concept bikes from various manufacturers that unfortunately did not make them ready for series production. Either way: we are already looking forward to future concept studies and prototypes, regardless of whether they make it to a production model or not.
