This Yamaha SR 500 “Scrambler” was lovingly handcrafted by Daniel Peter. The basic SR dates from 1978.

E.Daniel Peter actually works full-time as a photographer in Chicago. If you consider the conversion of the motorcycle enthusiast presented in this article, a full-time activity as a customizer could also be an obvious choice. The 34-year-old says he has always been a big fan of two-wheeled vehicles. When he was four years old, Daniel got his first BMX and he still raves about his first contact with a two-wheeler: “It was so easy and fun. Just wheels, pedals and brakes. I drove to the beach, made my first daring jumps and competed with my friends. It was an unforgettable day. “

Lots of experience with the SR 500

30 years later, Daniel is still living out his passion. He is still enthusiastic about the simplest possible two-wheelers, which is why he decided to convert a motorcycle as simple as possible. The choice fell on the 1978 Yamaha SR 500.

Successful conversion: the basic model dates from 1978.

The “Scrambler” is the fourth conversion that he has put on the wheels based on the SR 500. In general, Daniel is a big fan of the classic Yamaha bike. He is enthusiastic about the maneuverability, the sound and, last but not least, the suitability for everyday use of the SR 500. In addition, he has already gained a lot of experience with the SR 500. According to his own statements, he knew exactly where and how he could improve the SR 500 according to his ideas. For Daniel, the focus of the conversion work was primarily on reducing the weight and improving the drive.

Tank comes from the XT 500

Daniel was able to reduce the weight to 128 kilograms including a full petrol load. The original weight of the 78 Yamaha was just under 158 kilograms, but dry. In order to lure out more power from the engine, Daniel drilled the Yamaha drive and increased the displacement to 540 cm³. In addition, he replaced some components that make the bike much lighter and faster. He took the crankshaft from an XT 500, for example. The pistons, valve springs and oil pump are also new.

The exhaust system is a combination of specially manufactured components and a silencer from Cone Engineering. The 17-inch wheels come from Supermoto models from KTM (front) and Honda (rear). When it came to the tires, Daniel opted for the Pirelli MT60 Corsa. The brakes are from Brembo and Beringer. The tank, on the other hand, was donated by a Yamaha XT 500. Daniel came up with the idea for the paint job while driving in Baja (Mexico). The seat has also been replaced.

Incidentally, he did not mention how much Daniel Peter paid for his renovation and how long it took him to do it. But one thing is certain: the result is more than impressive.
