Full braking straight ahead is no problem with ABS. But avoid an obstacle in the process? This is also possible, but requires a lot of steering effort and should definitely be practiced. This is how you can get around a car in an emergency instead of denting it.

ABS Pro would not be feasible without the lean angle measurement via the sensor box and the brake force distribution between the front and rear.

Full braking in an inclined position

Emergency braking in an inclined position? The sheer horror. But which could come to an end. Because with ABS Pro, BMW has developed a control system that should take the horror out of these situations and help avoid falls even in the most leaned position. Does it work? We went into the circular path with the BMW HP4.

It is the ultimate nightmare. The exit is going first class again. You are right in the river, the grip is great and the slopes are good. You pepper the thing with more and more swing from one curve to the next. Until after this one bend a group of cyclists blocked half of the lane. The first shock is followed by the panic-like grip on the brakes. In the best case scenario, the machine straightens up and leaves the curve in a straight line without hitting an obstacle. Much more likely, however: the front wheel releases its grip when it is leaned, and off you go. With a bit of luck, you’ll be left with a lot of shock and scratches in the bike and confidence.

When driving straight ahead, ABS systems that are razor-sharp at the grip limit have been defusing such unpleasant surprises for several years. In curves, however, the situation is a little trickier, because less and less cornering forces can be transmitted with increasing lean angle. Getting a front wheel blocked for a short time to turn and grip again is much more difficult than driving straight ahead.

KTM made the start

The speed and quality of the control processes are then of essential importance. And reliable tilt detection, but above all correspondingly fast and sensitive pressure modulators are indispensable prerequisites for cornering ABS. KTM recently started and developed such an ABS together with Bosch, initially only for the long-legged Adventure. This is a pure – retrofittable – software solution. The complete hardware, from sensors to the pressure modulator, is taken over unchanged.

Now BMW is moving with the control system “ABS Pro” to. And chose BMW with the super sports car HP4 the type of vehicle that makes the highest demands. A light vehicle with a short wheelbase, powerful brakes, a low level of locking pressure in the hydraulic system – a brake that masters such conditions should also be able to cope with all other types of vehicle. At least in theory. But let’s stick with practice, our cordoned-off top test area with a circular path and evasive attempts in the normal range.

fact

Because it was not designed for braking at the limit, but for the needs of public road traffic, ABS Pro is only active in the Sport and Rain driving modes. Normal ABS is available for race and slick.

Like KTM, BMW also relies on the pressure modulator and sensor box from Bosch for the BMW HP4, which are already on board for the HP4 for ABS and traction control. The ABS Pro is a pure software solution that can be retrofitted for 380 euros. Lateral acceleration, lean angle, roll and yaw rate of the motorcycle are recorded. Depending on the lean angle and speed, the system limits the initial brake pressure and then builds up the brake pressure more slowly than when driving straight ahead.

In addition, when the front brake is applied, the electronics permanently distribute the brake pressure between the front and rear brakes. This serves to stabilize the BMW HP4 and the maximum deceleration. The ABS Pro can neither move nor outsmart the physical limits. There is no guarantee that you will not be rushed. The circular path from our top test course serves as a reference, with a diameter of 46 meters, it allows a speed of a good 55 km / h. A Tellert measuring device on the fork bridge showed the inclined position.

At 56 km / h and a 45 degree incline around the pylons

The warm-up program: get on the iron at around 30 degrees. An exercise that even a properly tuned conventional ABS can do. However, this is combined with a powerful set-up moment that the machine wants to lead straight out of the curve on a straight path. You have to consciously and vigorously hold the handlebars against it. The BMW HP4 with ABS Pro masters this situation very piously, the braking effect is applied gently, no standing up, the machine stays on course, and the driver has to be careful not to fall inward when stopping.

The same with a tilt of around 37 degrees, the limit of what is feasible for a good conventional ABS. Again the BMW HP4 decelerates without blinking an eyelid and stays cleanly on course. Well, then the tough program. Pinch your buttocks together, the tester arrows around the pylons at 56 km / h and a 45 degree incline. Even hardened testers have to give their weaker self a powerful kick in the butt at the thought of going straight into their irons. Then the lightning-fast grip on the brake. At first, the HP4 hardly seems to slow down at the front, the many fine control processes can be clearly felt in the handbrake lever. But the BMW brakes, even if only gently for the first fractions of a second. But that’s enough to reduce the inclination.

Much quieter with ABS Pro

The tire contact area and thus the possibility of applying braking power to the ground is increasing rapidly. As the lean angle decreases, the system immediately increases the brake pressure and noticeably distributes it to the rear wheel. The handlebars twitch briefly, but the BMW doesn’t rear up – and comes to a standstill after around 14.8 meters. This corresponds to an average deceleration of 7.8 m / s², with peak values of 9.1 m / s². An enormous achievement. The amazing thing: Completely compressed from a straight line, the HP4 comes to a stop only about half a meter earlier at the same speed. Obviously, G-forces help when cornering, which have the effect that both wheels are on the ground in an inclined position. When measuring at a 30 degree incline, the BMW HP4 comes to a stop even slightly sooner with the foot brake than when driving straight ahead.

The BMW HP4 also copes well with the demanding evasive exercise. Emergency braking at around 120 km / h to avoid an imaginary obstacle. Not an easy thing to overcome the steering forces of the BMW and turn. In the same attempt in 2012, an S 1000 RR buckled like a rodeo horse with a maximum of 10.9 degrees. The HP4 with ABS Pro remains significantly quieter and manages 15.9 degrees. Which means nothing else than that with regulating ABS you can hit a bigger hook around the obstacle. As long as you have practiced it. Because the best ABS is of little use if you don’t use it.

This is how it works “ABS Pro”

Cornering ABS of the BMW HP4

Manufacturer, MOTORCYCLE

ABS Pro would not be feasible without the lean angle measurement via the sensor box and the brake force distribution between the front and rear.

As with the KTM Adventure, the ABS Pro from BMW is also a pure software solution that is subsequently installed. All existing Bosch ABS components such as the sensor box and pressure modulator will continue to be used. The lean angle as well as roll and yaw rate and lateral acceleration are recorded. In addition the wheel speeds. The system uses these parameters to calculate how much braking force can be applied to the two wheels. Of course, a safety cushion is built in, which is why the system has its primary purpose on the road and not on the racetrack.

When braking, the system limits the maximum braking force and the speed of the brake pressure build-up from the outset, depending on the lean angle. It permanently distributes the braking force between the front and rear wheels. ABS Pro is therefore not feasible without a composite system. By limiting the maximum braking force and the brake pressure build-up with increasing lean angle, ABS Pro counteracts an abrupt change in steering force, which normally leads to the motorcycle standing up, even when the brakes are scared.

Conclusion

Cornering ABS of the BMW HP4

fact

Whether ABS Pro or normal ABS, the best technical options are only as good as their users.

And? It works! Of course, ABS Pro does not make you impossible to fall or help, like Márquez, Rossi and Co., to brake to the physical limit. But it defuses startling braking even in very lean angles. Modern ABS are also suitable for an incline up to a limit of around 35 degrees.

But while their shock braking is associated with a strong righting moment and the risk of braking straight ahead into oncoming traffic, the BMW with ABS Pro stays on track. Even with much larger inclines. And thanks to the intelligent brake force distribution, it also achieves remarkably short braking distances. But whether ABS Pro or normal ABS, the best technical options are only as good as their users. Which means: practice, practice, practice in order to use them in an emergency.
