Court bans Vespa copies in Italy

The Vespa is and will remain unique: clones of the world’s most famous scooter may not be sold, at least in Italy.

Vespa clones are not allowed to be sold in Italy. That was decided by a court in Turin, northern Italy. According to the judges, the shape of the Vespa falls under copyright law and enjoys special protection as an industrial design. This was preceded by a legal dispute between the Vespa manufacturer Piaggio and the Chinese company Zhejiang Zhongneng. In 2013, at the EICMA motorcycle fair in Milan, the company exhibited a Vespa clone called Ves, which was confiscated by the Italian financial police at Piaggio’s request.

The Turin court approved the action, and with it Piaggio, now; the Italian scooter manufacturer spoke of a “historic judgment”. Whether Donald Trump will be impressed by the Turin judge’s ruling seems questionable: The US President only recently had hefty punitive tariffs for them Vespa threatened.
