Electric steam engine for the free spirit

After Curtiss decided to only build electric motorcycles in 2018, we enjoyed a lot of crazy studies. With the One, the studies finally become series.

  • Conclusion

In the video for One by Curtiss Motorcycles, designer JT Nesbitt says something very interesting: “The part of the mind or brain that was previously intended to keep the internal combustion engine alive and driving is now free.” So playing with throttle and clutch, the thought of the right shift point. Basically everything that motorcycling has completed as puzzle pieces so far. All of this is eliminated with a direct drive electric motorcycle. All of this frees up time to ponder the important things while cruising the Curtiss One. For example, how this extraordinary motorcycle actually drives or where the hell I get the 90,000 dollars from to call this masterpiece of milling my own.

Curtiss One

Since 2018 there have been repeated studies of Curtiss, from Hera and Zeus, Psyche to Hades, to Hades Pure. After the ever new, wild studies designed beyond mechanical limits, a certain continuity has returned to Curtiss design since Hades. The main element is the battery pack housing, reminiscent of a turbine or reactor, as the lowest point of the motorcycle. Load-bearing in the truest sense of the word, because the aluminum housing is bolted between the two large aluminum flanks of the frame construction. This takes the engine with its 64 kilowatts or 87 hp continuous output. The peak output is 120 hp, but up to 217 hp or an absurd 367 Nm torque are possible. In the standard trim there are more than sufficient 160 to 200 Nm. The motor is fed by a battery built on cylindrical 18650 cells, i.e. 18 millimeters in diameter and 65 millimeters long. The cells are immersion-cooled, i.e. are cooled by a non-conductive liquid. Whether directly or indirectly is not documented. For comparison, an AA battery would be roughly 14,500. Previous reports on the Hades Pure indicated a capacity of 16.6 kWh for this design. Here’s a comparison: Zero motorcycles have a maximum of 14.4 kWh, World champion Energica 21.5 kWh and the LiveWire 15.5 kWh.

Fully adjustable chassis

With the One, Curtiss redefines the term fully adjustable chassis. Usually this only refers to the adjustment of the spring elements. The geometry of the One is also freely adjustable. The steering head of the Hossack fork can be adjusted to 63 or 59 degrees, which also correlates with the wheelbase. The ground clearance and seat height can be varied at the same time via an eccentric swing arm mounting. The ergonomics are even more individual thanks to the many options for adjusting the footrests using a large hole pattern. Cruiser today, street bike tomorrow – everything is possible. And JT Nesbitt comes to mind again, who nominates the lack of noise, heat and other structural features of a combustion engine as a limitation in the video. Understandable: With a foot switch and foot brake, such feats could only be performed to a very limited extent. Both of the RaceTech dampers used are fully adjustable. Perfect world. By the way: Due to the excessive use of aluminum and carbon, the Curtiss One weighs only 205 kilos. Which brings us to the price.

Prices and availability

Aluminum, carbon, only premium parts as attachments. It costs. $ 90,000, 9,000 of which is due upon order and is non-refundable. Black anodized add 3,000 dollars. The number is limited to 90 pieces. Delivery in the USA from mid-2022. If you can’t wait that long, you can pay 30,000 dollars, put together a freely configurable one and add another 85,000 dollars for delivery at the end of 2021. Power: $ 115,000 for the Work of Art versions of the One, limited to 15 copies. Fast calculators now know: 90,000 dollars is a good 75,000 euros. But don’t worry. The Curtiss One is not yet available in Europe, but negotiations are ongoing and the life insurance does not have to be terminated directly.

Conclusion

Great from Absurdistan. That is currently in the southern US in Leeds, Alabama and Curtiss is on the door. The One is a steam punk dream come true, a masterpiece of the art of milling and electrically powered. Demand: high. Price: Also. The ratio is right.
