The 2020 Dakar rally in Saudi Arabia ended with the deaths of two motorcycle pilots. As a result, the motorsport authority FIM wants to make motorcycle rallying safer. On Monday (March 2nd, 2020) representatives of the organizers, the FIM and various teams met in Lisbon to explore the possibilities.

Ex-professionals should help

As a first measure, an airbag requirement for all motorcyclists was agreed and the motorcycles should also be imposed a performance limit by means of an air restrictor in order to reduce the top speed. In addition, the route is to be selected in future in cooperation with ex-driver professionals who can delete sections of route that are too dangerous from the road book or include a corresponding description of the hazards in the route description. Overall, the route should be designed for a lower speed. The cockpit instruments are also to be redeveloped: information and warnings should be quicker and easier for the driver to grasp. The risk of injury emanating from the instrument holder should also be reduced.

The first practical tests with the new specifications should take place in spring 2020. With the experience gained, the new specifications can then be finalized by Dakar 2021.
