Isle of Wight is the name of the island on the south coast of Great Britain that was to be the venue for the new Diamond Races road race from 2021. In February, the organizers announced that the 2021 event had been canceled and that they were postponing the start to 2022.

The Diamond Races should take place for the first time at the end of the 2021 season and attract many riders to the British Superbike Championship BSB. The planning uncertainty, which the corona pandemic unfortunately still causes, has now led the organizers to postpone the start of the new road race to 2022. They don’t have a specific date yet. We suspect that they will be waiting for the British Superbike Championship (BSB) schedule.

Planned concept of “Diamond Races”

The training days in the race week were planned for Wednesday and Thursday, the time trial should take place on Saturday and the races on Sundays. Races should be in the Superbike, Supersport and Lightwight classes. There were also rumors about a class for electric motorcycles. At this point we would like to remind you that the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, the electric racing class, has been deleted from the program for two years and will only be revived when it does “sufficient prospects” according to the IoM organizers in October 2019.

Diamond Races

The course is 12.4 miles, so almost 20 kilometers long with a very fast, approximately 8 kilometers long coastline.

For the visitors, the organizers planned show rides of motorcycles with sidecars and, as the icing on the cake, there should also be a guided motorcycle tour over the closed course. The course itself is 12.4 miles, so just under 20 kilometers long. It passes through picturesque villages such as Chale, Kingston, Shorwell and Brighstone. And along the military road there is an eight kilometer long, very fast stretch of coast.

The new event will be carried out according to ACU regulations. The Isle of Wight Council and motorcycle racing experts also participated in the development. Key figures who started the event include Gary Thompson MBE (Isle of Man TT Clerk of the Course), Steve Plater (former Isle of Man TT senior winner and former British champion), Neil Tuxworth (former Honda Racing Manager) as well as James Kaye (former British Touring Car Championship driver and co-founder of Diamond Races) and Matt Neal (three-time British Touring Car Champion and Honda UK Ambassador).

Diamond Races

The organizers planned a guided motorcycle tour over the cordoned-off course for the visitors.

Off the racetrack, the British wanted “Sunny island” offer additional attractions for families and holidaymakers during their visit. Since the Diamond Races should have taken place in October 2021, they should have marked the end of the holiday season on the island in addition to the end of the BSB season. That would be next to the Isle of Wight Music Festival in June and the sailing regatta “Cowes Week” in August – was another tourist magnet.

Conclusion

A new end to the British Superbike season, a beautiful road course for the drivers and a boost for tourism and the island’s economy – we would have wished that for everyone involved in 2021. We keep our fingers crossed that the Diamond Races will kick off in 2022.
