Dispute over motorcycle noise
Green with position paper

The green parliamentary group has summarized six measures in a position paper to protect local residents and at the same time enable motorcycle tours. Above all, the politicians wanted more consideration from motorcyclists.

As Spiegel reports, the position paper with six required measures was drawn up by MP Daniela Wagner and her colleagues Oliver Krischer, Matthias Gastel and Stephan Kuhn.

According to the paper, a loud minority of bikers is currently contributing to the fact that more and more people perceive motorcycle noise as a problem. That, the authors argue, is “the receipt for years of inaction by the federal government on the subject of motorcycle noise”. You are therefore calling for six measures to be implemented.

More consideration from motorcyclists

Motorcyclists should be encouraged to be more considerate, especially through measures such as noise displays and cooperation between those affected and bikers, since the current machines, which can legally be driven very loudly, will be on the road for a long time.

80 dB limit is to come

The measurement conditions for the noise limit value are also to be revised. Although the noise limit for motorcycles was lowered from 80 to 77 dB in 2016, maximum revs and speeds above 80 km / h were not included in the type approval of the machines, which was criticized as being unrealistic. The MPs therefore join the demand of the Federal Council and demand a limit value of 80 decibels for all driving conditions.

Incentives for quiet motorcycles required

The prohibition of the “useless moving back and forth”, which is aimed primarily against so-called car posers, is to be expanded from the area of built-up areas to local routes. There is also a requirement for owner liability in order to be able to hold motorcyclists more accountable, as well as better noise protection rules, which in future also take into account peak levels, as is required, for example, in the case of aircraft noise during the night. The MPs are therefore calling for incentives for the introduction of quieter motorcycles.

How do you feel about motorcycling and noise??

There is no need for excessive noise, so I adapt my driving style.

This is not noise, but sound – and it is part of riding a motorcycle, no matter how loud.

Conclusion

The Greens are trying to act as an intermediary, but are sticking to the unrealistic demand for the 80 dB limit value for all driving conditions.
