It still sounds pithy, but it blows out more to the side than upwards: the Shiver’s exhaust

A TFT display cannot be taken for granted in the middle class. Overview and readability including menu navigation are great

Despite new air inlets, modified exhaust ends and slightly redesigned plastic parts: The Shiver has remained true to itself

More displacement, same nominal power

The Aprilia Shiver 900 is the successor to the 750 series. MOTORRAD gathered its first driving impressions.

The Aprilia Shiver story began in 2007 as a 750. The liquid-cooled 90-degree V engine mobilized 95 hp at 9,000 rpm. Ten years later, the Aprilia appears S.hiver 900 is the successor. Its engine is based on its predecessor, retains its 92 mm bore and, at 67.4 millimeters, offers 11 mm more stroke.

More displacement, same nominal power

Aprilia Shiver 900 still with 95 hp

Sounds like more torque, but also more power for the Aprilia Shiver 900? No, the V2 continues to develop 95 horsepower, but only has to turn 8,750 rpm. Aprilia deliberately opted for this restriction in order to be able to offer the Shiver as an A2-compatible motorcycle. Your torque has increased by 11 Newton meters, the maximum value of 90 Nm is at 6,500 rpm. So grabbed the wide, well-cranked handlebars, jerked your bum onto the comfortable bench at a height of 81 centimeters, enjoyed the adjustable hand levers on the brake and clutch and pressed the starter. Bubbler, braap. At least now it is clear: The Aprilia Shiver is back. It sounds pleasantly bassy and powerful from the rear – without being too loud.

Sports mode works fine

Three driving modes. Sport, Touring and Rain are available. As with traction control, you can switch back and forth between them while driving. "Rain" cuts the power to around 70 hp. Good for curling up in the morning. Soft response meets restrained power delivery. It changes spontaneously when touring fashion is allowed to run. The Aprilia Shiver 900 is now noticeably stronger at full power. It gets a little more pithy with the sport mode. Its responsiveness remains far from any criticism, so it can stay there for the rest of the day.

The Aprilia Shiver 900 is not a handling miracle. Tires with stiff Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier D 209, it steers in quite neutrally, but needs a clear impulse. This is not surprising when you look at the chassis data. 109 millimeters of caster, 64.1 degrees of steering head angle and 1,465 millimeters of wheelbase do not make the Shiver a nimble hop, but rather a stable and reliable partner. The fork and shock absorber of the Shiver 900 are adjustable in rebound and preload and have enough reserves.

TC and ABS can be switched off

This also applies to the brakes, which are monitored by a Continental two-channel ABS. The Aprilia Shiver 900 can be easily compressed with two fingers. The radial pliers and the two 320 mm washers at the front do not even hose down pass descents, the pressure point remains stable. The gear pairs find each other reliably during a joyful gallop, and the hydraulic clutch scores with good controllability. And then there is the noticeable torque increase. The V2 takes to the lower gears from around 2,000 rpm. It turns emphatically nimbly up to the Nm maximum. Up to here and below he feels really good, pulls the chain tight. Turned further up, towards maximum performance, his vigor feels slightly less.

The effectively regulating traction control intervenes early in the action in level three, in level two or one the coordination for the joyful alpine glow is better. Cross drivers are also allowed to switch off the TC – just like the ABS. Thanks to intuitive operation and perfect readability of the TFT display, individual setups can be completed quickly. Therefore, the following applies: The Aprilia Shiver 900 did really well – in terms of torque and the significantly upgraded equipment.
