The sporty naked bike from Ducati

The monster comes of age. For his eighteenth birthday, Ducati has given him the most powerful air-cooled V2 of all time, refined ergonomics and other nice gifts, which is what gives it its name "Evo" brings.

First the Streetfighter, then recently the Diavel. Muscular, nasty naked bikes are apparently currently booming at Ducati. A role that was previously reserved for the monsters.

However, this should by no means be sidelined. No, Ducati knows about the attraction of the Monster family in general and its head in particular and has therefore given it a proper model upgrade. Rightly. On the one hand, the Monster 1100 was the best-selling Ducati after the Multistrada last year. On the other hand, it embodies the classic, pure driving machine like no other. Free of unnecessary frills, completely committed to unfiltered driving pleasure.

D.In order to keep it that way, it got handlebar brackets 20 millimeters higher and a newly contoured seat. Both can be retrofitted to the previous model in order to stop the nagging at the previously very front-wheel-oriented seating position. And a new air-cooled 1100 twin was implanted. Although it’s not that new at all. Basically, it is the unit from the Hypermotard 1100 Evo. In contrast to the previous monster drive, it has pistons that increase the compression from 10.7 to 11.3: 1. Optimized intake ports and combustion chambers, which make dual ignition superfluous, and sharper camshafts. The flywheel of the 848, the generator cover made of magnesium alloy and the Vacural cast housing save 2.5 kilograms in weight. And from now on the monster trainer can enjoy the convenience of the smooth-running APTC anti-hopping clutch, which is now bathed in engine oil.

It has always been a beauty: the Ducati Monster.

For those who take it easy, the gentle and easily calculable push from below will suffice. However, if the sequence of bends is to be conquered quickly, frequent gear changes are required so that the speed does not fall below 5. But thanks to the smooth clutch and the precise gearbox, this is not an act. Even at high speeds, the vibrations do not become uncomfortable and the twin does not become rowdy. Rather, its pitch changes from bassy drumming to pithy hammering, in order to unabashedly slap out of the short end pots in push mode.

Brake pads that respond more gently take the brakes off the edge the first time they grip them. But this also means that she has lost the right sportsmanship, the energetic bite that you want for late braking maneuvers. This coordination is definitely sufficient for normal pace. At a very sporty pace, however, the stoppers appear blunt despite high hand forces.

In terms of chassis technology, everything stayed the same. And so there are actually no surprises: And yet it is astonishing what difference 20 millimeters handlebar height can make. You don’t feel so tight over the front wheel for a long time, you have the matter easily in your hand. And although the handlebars still kept their idiosyncratic bend, this is nowhere near that bothering. And because the new seat no longer pushes the pilot so obtrusively towards the tank, the monsters are chased through the curves with pronounced ease. No question about it, the new seating arrangement is doing her extremely well. Although these monsters do not drive through curves with 100% neutrality, they still need a gentle pull on the handlebars. In return, it almost completely avoids the inconvenience of tilting it up. The new Pirelli Diablo Rosso II, equipped with soft rubber on the flanks and plenty of grip at the rear thanks to the dual-compound construction, harmonize very well.

The ease that driving gets through the sporty, relaxed seating position puts you in a great mood, and so the monster sails through the curves with finely and precisely drawn arcs. Even if the fork was set quite softly during the ride and the balance was not yet optimal. Unfortunately, the tight schedule did not offer time for some coordination work, so that has to be postponed to the first test. If the driver takes it too far on the steam bike, the traction control is at his side in tricky situations, such as volcanic earth spread across the road from rain. Which rounds off the fine first impression of the Monster 1100 Evo. And that’s probably the best birthday present.
