Driving report Gilera GP 800

Grand Prix of Milan

The second is already the first loser, they say. The disgrace that the king of scooters in the form of the Suzuki Burgman 650 does not come from the land of frothed milk, but from the land of the rising sun, should be eradicated by the Gilera GP 800.

You can also provoke a misunderstanding. Because although the Gilera presented in Milan was completely redesigned GP 800 is eloquently praised as the sporty spearhead of scooter construction, which is primarily intended to lure drivers of mid-range motorcycles onto its wide seat, should one under no circumstances misunderstand its naming as a reference to the MotoGP racing series.

GP would not stand for “Grand Prix”, but for “Gilera Performance”. And in order to prove this performance, the Italian metropolis of Milan literally urges itself, especially the local rush hour offers the best conditions for checking handling properties (except for the turning circle), intermediate sprint qualities (subjectively tired) and braking performance (yeah!), while the pilot, who is unfamiliar with the location, tries, together with around twenty other colleagues, not to lose sight of the local tour guide.

Gilera

Not seen for a long time: a scooter with chain drive.

In the arterial road qualifying, the starting grid for the high-speed contest on the local motorway ring is determined. Thanks to the smart and creative lane selection of the pace scooter, the speedometer needle reaches just below the 200 km / h mark. In this respect, the specified 75 PS of the newly designed 90-degree V2 engine, which in the same form also powers the Aprilia Mana, which will soon be debuting, should be completely available. The GP runs stubbornly straight ahead, which speaks in favor of the choice of wheels from the front 16 inches and rear 15 inches.

Furnishing

Gilera

The GP 800, available at the end of the year, is big and powerful.

The windshield is quite neat, and thanks to the electrically adjustable windshield, the driver can continuously vary its height and thus the noise level from loud (windshield down) to unbearable (windshield up). Compared to the previous king of scooters, the aforementioned Burgman 650, the Italian is downright poorly equipped. It has: speedometer, tachometer, two trip counters, outside and coolant thermometer as well as tank and timer.

In addition, a parking brake and a main stand. Last but not least, adjustable brake levers with which two discs at the front and one at the rear can be gripped independently of each other. This is done with medium hand strength, moderate transparency, but powerful effect. In any case, stronger than the Pirelli GTS tires are able to transfer. ABS is currently not available, but according to Gilera it is already ready in the drawer so that it can be offered immediately if there is a demand. Originally, the developers had planned a toothed belt drive for the GP 800, but following changes from the marketing department, a can of chain spray now always takes up its place in the not exactly lush helmet compartment. This is annoying, especially since there are no other compartments or shelves. The fat engine needs space, so the center tunnel is wide, and the running boards are narrow. In length, space is not an issue.

It remains incomprehensible why the GP is deprived of the goodies of the Mana, which are of the same construction as the motor. With this, the pilot will have the option, similar to the aforementioned Burgman, either to drive in automatic mode or to be able to select different gear ratios using the tip switch with the left hand. The price of the GP 800 is really big at the moment: 9400 euros testify to the healthy self-confidence of the Italians.
