Driving report Honda Hornet 900

Should and have

After the technical exuberance of an X-Eleven, Honda makes a new calculation with the Hornet 900 in the area of the big naked people, which is under completely different circumstances.

At Honda they may have secretly milked some mice. Put a motorcycle on its feet with the X-Eleven that has everything. Powerful engine, super stable chassis, injection, G-Kat, composite braking system. But others have the greatest success. Obviously, when it comes to naked bikes, less is more.
So now the Hornet 900. A motorcycle in which the “less” can be seen at first glance. No wonder, since the big Hornet took over almost all of the relevant chassis data from its little sister. Wheelbase, steering head angle, rims, tires ?? everything in 600 format. If it weren’t for the second silencer, also pulled up under the rear frame, it would be difficult to tell the difference.
In the state. Because already the first expressions of life make it clear that great things can be expected here. The short bursts of gas sing deeply and deeply the song of praise for the displacement, which does not at all want to match the delicate appearance of the Hornet. On the contrary: associations with the Fireblade are awakened. Not without good reason, because in fact the motor of the 1998 Fire Blade is in the only slightly modified mono backbone frame of the little Hornet. In view of the threatening violence, its wall thickness was increased from 1.6 to 2.3 millimeters, and the steering head now accepts a 43 instead of a 41 fork.
Is that enough? Doubts arise because a full-blown 900 has never been so small, so delicate. Despite the larger tank compared to the 600 Hornet (19 instead of 16 liters). And despite a peak performance that has been reduced by 20 hp to 110 hp, because an injection system with 36 throttle valves now ensures the mixture formation, the compression has been reduced and the valve timing has been changed. But that’s really enough for a coherent concept?
Of course that’s enough, because the 600 already has 95 hp. Even more. Abundance reigns supreme on this puristic motorcycle. This is ensured by the maximum torque of 92 Nm, which is already available at 6500 rpm and, in conjunction with a shorter secondary ratio, makes it clear from the first few meters: Now we’re moving forward. The Hornet is completely alien to procrastination. She goes hard on the gas, converting every little twist of the throttle into vehement propulsion. Acceleration becomes an experience.
Und to one without regrets, because the chassis cooperates bravely, runs bravely straight ahead, nimble? no wonder with a dry weight of 194 kilograms ?? falls from one lean angle to the other in order to stay on course even under difficult conditions. The fact that the tuning of the non-adjustable fork is on the comfortable side and that the 900s clearly stand up when braking in an inclined position, at least with the Michelin TX 15/25 tires, is gladly accepted, because the corner robbery in the assembled, but not uncomfortable Sitting position has rarely been so fun. Braking? the braking system of the 1996 Fireblade does its job perfectly. And then comes the best. Real fire, no matter which corridor. Anyone Need More Maybe a small price. Honda charges 17,191 marks and 75 pfennigs for the large Hornet. This is really a good balance between debit and credit.
