KTM’s touring supermoto finally with ABS

Ready to race – in KTM’s self-image, reason has so far only played a subordinate role. That has changed. The 990 SM T is the beginning – with ABS as standard equipment and at no extra charge.

Anti-lock braking system – this word still comes from the product developers KTM a little bumpy over the lips. Understandable, after all, the brothers in the sporting spirit have had completely different maxims in common up to now: faster, stronger, lighter – this is the spirit to which KTM bikes were committed. An ABS that was previously only granted to the travel enduro adventure. But the world is changing. With the Honda Fireblade, BMW S 1000 RR and Kawasaki ZX-10R, the supersport elite now has anti-lock devices that are suitable for the race track. And, of all things, the most sensible by far became KTM’s best-selling street model: the 990 SM T. T for Touring. A small half fairing, a larger tank, a deeper seat bench, shortened spring travel and an optional luggage system were enough to domesticate the genetic basis, the 990 supermoto – and thus to write the first chapter of said success story two years ago.

Fine adjustment only: slightly tighter spring rate of the Monoshock from WP Suspension.

The enthusiasm with which the 120 hp V2 engine revs up, the razor-sharp precision with which the brilliantly tuned chassis plunges itself into corners of all kinds, the playfully easy operating forces of the gearbox and clutch, this has an experience value that at most in the travel group still the Ducati Multistrada has to offer. Especially since the KTM 990 SM T does not forget its tourist claim despite this orientation. Even with the suspension, which has recently become a little firmer, the set-up remains sufficiently comfortable, the seat height of 850 millimeters is at the standard level for this class, the wind protection is acceptable and the range with 19 liters of fuel tank is suitable for tours.

The euphoric KTM driver quickly forgets that ABS is on board. He may too. Because with a – as usual – sporty-aggressive basic set-up, the lock preventer cannot be lured out of reserve so quickly. Even when decelerating heavily over heavy bumps, a critical situation in which conservative ABS designs often regulate too early, the KTM stoppers still bite sharply for a long time, ensuring short braking distances.

The flip side of the coin: When the brakes are full, the KTM 990 SM T nervously lifts the rear towards the end of the braking distance, clearly feeling its way to the limit of what is possible. Incidentally, a limit from which even experienced drivers without ABS support will usually stay far away. Incidentally, the decisive reason why the anti-lock braking system also significantly enhances the value of the KTM SM T. And the debate will also be over.

What’s new?

  • ABS as standard (additional weight: one kilogram)
  • Shock absorber spring harder (previous spring rate: 14 kg / mm, 2011: 15 kg / mm)
  • Tighter damping on fork and shock absorber
  • Rear frame revised (enlarged storage compartment under the seat)
  • Hazard warning lights
