New tourer from Moto Guzzi

Moto Guzzi was once a touring force. Now the completely renewed Norge is to build on the traditions of the house.

It’s about time. While Stelvio, Griso and 1200 Sport have been able to boast of the four-valve engine from Moto Guzzi for several years, the travel steamer Norge of all things was still struggling with the old two-valve – even though strong draft and a lot of steam are most welcome with a fully loaded load. But better late than never. For the 90th birthday of the Italian brand, the Norge is now getting the company’s most modern drive system, which has even been redesigned, with new valves and camshafts, a different oil cooler, a larger silencer and improved engine management.

D.Fortunately, the two-cylinder has retained the characteristic Guzzi thump, as well as the primeval force with which it comes to life. The first gear engages with a loud click, and the premiere drive through the hills around Florence can begin. And indeed: the four-valve engine gives the previously too good Norge new vigor. According to the data sheet, it delivers 102 hp, almost ten more than before. Above all, however, the stronger torque of 104 instead of 96 Newton meters is noticeable. That is why the Norge did not become a dragster, but it is moving forward with a lot more research. She traverses fast passages through long Tuscan avenues with increased self-confidence, so that there is hardly any time to admire the picturesque cypress trees.

Complete overview: the instruments, including the on-board computer, can be read easily even in the sun.

The landing gear didn’t get away unscathed either. It remains with the previous telescopic fork. But it now has new springs and the central spring strut got a more neutral set-up. The Norge still tends to feel rather soft, but that is quite appropriate for a travel steamer. In the interplay of fast and tight corners, it acts confidently, cushions and dampens bumps in the asphalt and can be willingly directed. She keeps the given line precisely and does not save with welcome feedback. Admittedly, with every thrust of the gas she bows briefly to the right, as usual, but after all you want to feel that you are sitting on a Guzzi, right? In the saddle of the Norge, which is now even more softly padded, you feel safe and secure even at faster speeds, especially since the brakes, equipped with the latest generation ABS from Continental, react perfectly and always decelerate appropriately. They bring the tourer, which weighs more than 280 kilograms with a full tank, to a standstill without biting excessively.

Short stop for the photo shoot after a brisk cornering. But what is it? A loud whirring noise can be heard when the engine is switched off. Did Guzzi secretly install a water-cooled engine? False alarm, a look ahead reveals the riddle: The oil cooler under the manifold has an electronically controlled fan, which reports when the Guzzi gets up to temperature.

In addition to the on-board computer and ABS, the Norge comes with heated grips and newly shaped, color-coordinated cases as standard. In addition, the windshield is now electrically adjustable as standard; however, the corresponding control buttons for raising and lowering the vehicle cannot be reached very easily because they are located far inside the cockpit. The electronic problems that occasionally tormented the old model should no longer occur, because, according to Guzzi, a comprehensive revision took place here too.

Conclusion: the operation was a success. The completely renewed Norge may not have become a real temperament, but it has shed its former comfort. With renewed vigor, she is allowed to get involved in the tourer powers again. Maybe not at the very top yet, but on a much higher level.
