Alpine swingers

Mighty, fateful: the Moto Guzzi Stelvio is as impressive as the Stelvio Pass, after which it was named.

It is possible that the new, mighty, large-scale Enduro Stelvio will doom M.oto Guzzi has a say. The Italian manufacturer hopes that it will conquer a piece of the GS cake and thus increase the Guzzi production of almost 10,000 motorcycles annually. As a real competitor for the BMW they don’t want the Stelvio to be understood, but rather as an “exclusive alternative”.

MOTORRAD was allowed to try out a prototype in January (3/2008). Since then, the characteristics of the 1200 two-cylinder engine have been improved. Thanks to a new mapping and small changes to the two-in-one exhaust system, the engineers filled the performance gap between 3500 and 5500 tours that was determined at the time. Almost at least, because the four-valve engine continues to be accompanied by a slightly braked power output in this area, but this is rarely noticeable on winding country roads and on simple gravel paths, both domains of the Stelvio.

The engine develops its full power of 105 hp at 7000 rpm; then he accelerates crisply and with verve out of the corners. The convincing chassis with the Marzocchi fork and the Boge spring strut iron out unevenness in the asphalt, has the calm away on gravel and keeps the thick ship on the specified course even in the tightest hairpin bends. Sit on it, drive off, feel good ?? Although the load weighs a solid five hundred pounds with a full tank, there are no uncertainties. The center of gravity is higher than that of the GS model, but the well-thought-out, slightly forward-inclined seating position ensures an overview and control.

The quality of workmanship makes a good impression, as is the adjustable seat height and the adjustable window, which protects drivers of all sizes. A big plus point is the sonorous sound, which penetrates the ear even while driving and gives the comfortable alpine swinger a high level of sympathy.

In terms of accessories, Guzzi wants to supply everything for the Stelvio, from tank bags and suitcases to the right textile combination. An ABS is currently missing, it should be ready in summer. That leaves the price, which at 12,750 euros was as exclusive as Guzzi would like the Stelvio image to be.
