Driving report Moto Morini 1200 Granpasso

On the Passo, set, go

In addition to Benelli TreK Amazonas and Moto Guzzi Stelvio, the Moto Morini Granpasso is another Italian who is on the throne of the queen of travel enduros, the BMW GS.

As is well known, beauty is a matter of taste, although there is broad agreement that the current travel enduros exude a rather bitter charm. In this respect, the new Moto Morini Granpasso, whose production is starting these days, is full of music. MOTORRAD was able to check on a pre-production copy how things are going with the further performance.

In order to make the power and torque curves more linear and fuller than the street version Corsaro 1200, the distinctive 87-degree V2 (as already for the Avio and 9½ models) was modified in some points. Essentially, these are new camshafts with less lift and smaller valves. Together with an adapted mapping, the maximum values of 118 hp and 104 Nm are around 15 percent below those of the Corsaro. Consumption should be around 20 percent lower, which with the 27-liter tank would bring a range of around 400 kilometers. The Granpasso is still not really economical.

So much for the theory. In practice, the Italian delights with high-quality add-on parts such as adjustable hand levers on the two radial pumps with steel braided lines. The windshield is four-way adjustable, the Supermoto-proven Excel rims are fitted with Metzeler Tourance tires as standard. The exhaust system is made entirely of stainless steel, and the Ohlins shock absorber is fully adjustable, unlike the Marzocchi upside-down fork. So you have to live with the very tight coordination at the front.

Apart from the high seating position, the ergonomics are no cause for complaint, especially since the Morini accessories catalog includes a three centimeter lower bench. The wide, butted handlebars are easy to reach and help maintain an upright, yet active posture. The design of the brakes got tame, which gives a better feeling on trips into the terrain. Thanks to the very narrow tires, the Morini throws itself lightly from one lean angle to the other.

The V2 hangs on the gas gently but still powerfully. Full load in the first two gears sends the front wheel skyward. From 2500 rpm there is chop-free propulsion, from 3000 rpm there should always be over 90 Nm torque. So, even if the gearbox can be shifted easily and precisely, you can powercruise in high gear. So it is easy to imagine that Bayern will lose one or the other customer to Italy. The Granpasso will be available from dealers from mid-July.
